  1. Man, I really should take all the pictures BEFORE starting a thread. Let's wrap here with one last silver Spidey and another issue I have always come back to... Amazing Spider-Man 19 - 4.0 - 1st appearance of Mac Gargan - $225 In keeping with Stan's everyman imagining of Parker, when he still firmly held the reins of the title, Spider-Man's plot armor had already been pierced before this point in issue #12. In issue #18 he ducks out of a fight with Sandman in front of JJJ and a host of witnesses and is lambasted for being a coward. This is also probably the strongest character moment for Aunt May in the early issues. Dealing with an illness that had her wheelchair bound, Peter returns home to find May walking around against the doctor's orders because quitting when things are tough just isn't in her. An inspired Peter gets back in costume before issue #19 and gives a couple villains a mean walloping. This issue begins a thread concerning Parker's stick-to-itiveness that Stan Lee and Ditko teamed up to realize in issue #33. Nuff said! And nuff thread! Closing tomorrow evening, thanks for checking it out!
  2. I think this may be the last silver Spidey for today so let's make it a big one. Not a dream!! Not an imaginary tale! This is - IMO of course - the 2nd most important issue of Amazing Spider-Man in his first 25 appearances, after AF15 Amazing Spider-Man 12 - 3.5 - $400 In this issue, a sick Spider-Man is rendered almost powerless via illness but could that stop our hero, Peter Parker? Not when his main squeeze Betty Brant is under assault from the deadly Dr. Octopus(in only his 3rd appearance). The young, inexperienced, powerless Spider-Man is mercilessly whipped by Doc Ock, beaten easily, and then unmasked in front of Betty, J Jonah Jameson, and a host of witnesses - who all think Parker is such a dweeb that the idea he might actually be Spider-Man was inconceivable to those around him. This sets up an important dichotomy for early Spider-Man. Early on, the plain cloth suit that transformed him into Spider-Man also importantly let him shed the baggage that came with having been Peter Parker all his life. Later, as Romita Sr. joined the book, the two characters became much more similar to the point of being near-indistinguishable but early Spider-Man and Peter Parker were very different in how they carried themselves and how they were perceived. As a high schooler Peter was often preoccupied with what others thought of him and here all of his inner monologue's worst fears are confirmed! Not even fighting with Doctor Octopus could change how his friends and associates viewed him. I think Ditko wasn't quite controlling the reins here yet. By the time Pete graduated, and Ditko was more under control of the characterization of Parker vs. Spider-Man, Pete became someone that was above the antics of typical early college kids - he was secretly Spider-Man. Watching this shift as the book gets closer to Ditko's departure after issue 38 has always been very fascinating to me. Stan's Peter was an everyman that was invisible to his peers. As Ditko began to control more of the vision than Stan Ditko's Parker was an ubermensch, morally superior to those around them but they were too dumb to see how special he was. Then Romita Sr and Stan combined to make him a super heartthrob throughout the late 60s lots of romance plots which stuck to the character from that point on. Could go on forever about these early issues! If you think there is a more important early issue than #12 I'm open to being challenged but I will come away thinking you were wrong* *#18 and #19 have an argument but come on, it's #12
  3. Alright, I promised an ASM under #100 for under $100 let's go with... ASM 67 - 6.0 - $80 This is my favorite Romita Sr. cover EVER! This is also IMO the best Mysterio appearance, at least by Beck. Reportedly, Stan received a lot of negative mail about introducing Robbie Robertson in ASM 51 so Stan, who enjoyed trolling Marvel readers, introduced Randy Robertson in this issue! I challenge you to find a better presenting 6.0. Very deep colors, main image is sharp... the main issue here are the rounded corners on the right side which accounts for most of the flaws here.
  4. You're right. I need to press on. Had probably a bit too much at Yats... couldn't decide between the gumbo and the chili cheese etoufee so I got the half and half and ended up 100% knocked out Even ordered some peanut butter pie that I'll have to have after dinner tomorrow. That's the trouble with generally eating once a day... hungry eyes when you go over that menu
  5. Haven't been posting as fast as I expected so I'll extend the deadline to Sunday @ 8 PM and wrap up posting after I get back from lunch. If you're ever in Indianapolis try YATS! Still have a few early ASMs and some silver age stuff coming up, along with a few more moderns, and should wrap posting this evening.
  6. Spider-Men 1 CGC 9.8 - Peter Parker Meets Miles Morales, Appreciates Alliteration Altogether - $70
  7. Amazing Spider-Man 4 (vol 3) - 1st Silk - $250 The Boys and Invincible have been huge hits for Amazon Prime. We've heard recently that this is still in development but haven't really seen anything or heard any details. Could this be another smash? Or will Sony be meddling and tinkering and effing it all up? Who knows! I am a big fan of Silk and have... too many copies of this book so obviously I think it's a good buy show or not...
  8. Here's an old Hawkman book - $70 Pretty nice for an old book. This one has been pressed and cleaned and has some issues that likely can't be repaired(upper left corner for example) so think this is at it's peak FYI
  9. I said earlier that there would be more ASMs under $100. I meant to say ASMs under #100. But since I said it I will be posting at least one ASM under #100 for under $100. Just posting as I go through my boxes for now though, it's coming! But for now Batman 608 - $70 Note: There is a newton ring on the top middle of the front side. I've watched videos on removing these that seem pretty simple but never tried myself full disclosure. Unfortunately there is a picture of Tom Brady's ugly mug on the back cover which CANNOT be removed without impacting the grade. Full disclosure.
  10. Alright, starting this thread before taking the drive for South Texas to the middies was a... bad idea. I will be closing this thread when I wake up tomorrow morning around 8 AM ET. Any books that are not sold will be listed on Ebay starting at $.01 with no reserve so if you thought they were too pricey here you will have a second shot at them there. I think I have priced solidly under Ebay's most recent sales so I will not be accepting offers on any of the remaining books or anything I post today. I did not want this to be a sympathy thread - and I still don't - but maybe it would be helpful if I just came clean here. My dog was diagnosed with lymphoma the day before I posted this thead and I want to turn these books into as many chemotheraphy sessions as I can. I have a couple thousand socked away for the first couple and I'll get a few paychecks before that runs out but treatment could last a bit longer than that. The prognosis is not good but there is a slight chance we could achieve remission and she can have a couple cancer-free months to enjoy. For me, I would gladly trade my collection to buy her a few more healthy months. I would give it up for a chance for her to have that, even if I know that is unlikely. I would not trade her for a whole stack of pristine Amazing Fantasy 15's, no way no how. I would like to stress that I DO NOT want anyone to over-extend themselves to help out or to buy something they don't really want just to help out or anything like that which is why I didn't mention this to begin with. I only mention this now because I typically do except offers but cannot on this occasion. There are so many stupid, smelly dogs out there but this one is mine Anyway, going to look through what I have here with me and should finish listing in the next hour or two. Thank y'all
  11. I've got a loooong drive ahead of me from Texas to the Midwest, half of which I'll be embarking on here soon... so might update when I reach the halfway point and hit my hotel, might update when I get up in the morning... might update after I arrive on Thursday... but there IS an update coming. Will include a couple more ASMs under $100 but how low will I go?
  12. And how about Amazing Spider-Man 15, first Kraven the Hunter? 3.0, has been pressed and cleaned so don't think there is a rehab opportunity here but nice book with deep colors. There was a 5 marked over Kraven in grease pencil that has mostly been removed. Note that there are 3 staples added after manufacturing, noted on label. See Photos. $800
  13. Let's start with what was once the earliest issue of ASM I owned, Amazing Spider-Man 4. IMO presents solidly and looks like about a 2.0 or so but it is missing an ad page that does not affect story. $500 for the first appearance of Sandman
  14. Got some bad news yesterday but hopefully I can at least turn a few frowns upside down over here. Standard rules apply here - don't be a jerk. $15 flat shipping on up to 2 slabs, $5 additional beyond that, shipping capped at $20. I'm going to start with a couple ASMs and may list some moderns later and tomorrow. I think these are solidly below GPA and will try to give some solid deals here but feel free to give feedback on that
  15. I bought around 15 copies of these out of that dollar bin. Looks like they're going for around $15-25 pretty reliably right now as Ultimatum is part of the current Miles story arc. Will probably let go of a couple of my lower grade copies soon to cover my costs and collect a bit of profit now. Do think I have a few that are pretty high grade, might pre-screen those. I have been meaning to update this thread with some of my long term pickups from the last few months... stay tuned think I'll do that later today
  16. Finally got it done about a month or so ago... low grade is better than no grade though I hope to upgrade this a couple times over the years to come
