When I first saw this cover in a collection, I was hoping that I would get a chance to eventually trade for it. This is clearly one of the best Hughes covers that I’ve ever seen. Featured Artists: Steve Ditko Ross Andru Jack Kirby Featured Page: Amazing Spider-Man #337 p19 by Erik Larsen It’s well known, according to Eric Larsen himself, that a fire occurred in his garage and that he lost his Spider-Man original art that was stored there. It doesn’t happen often that quality pages come out on the market. It doesn’t get much better than that last panel of Spider-Man swinging through the city. There are actually 2 of Spider-Man’s greatest villains on this page, Sandman and the Vulture. There’s a ½” tear on the middle left margin that doesn’t go into the art. STUNNING BEAST Amazing Adventures #12 p1 (Second Furry Beast) The furry Beast was born in the issue before this one. Mike Ploog heralds his arrival by giving us this magnificent splash of the Beast. The rain makes him seem like a wax figure melting his malevolence upon an unexpecting world. This is clearly the best splash of the Beast that’s been created. I should know since I went through every issue looking for a better one 😁. This is, arguably, better than having any of the covers of the run other than his first appearance in the prior issue. The closeups of Conan are gorgeous by Barry Smith, and the black background adds great depth to the page. It doesn’t hurt to have a beautiful maiden in bondage about to be sacrificed. Not to mention that Sal inks on the Barry pencils makes it even more pleasing. Everett and Spidey Magic Marvel Tales #28 Cover by Marie Severin Bill Everett was at his masterful peak in 1970. This is as flawless a Spider-Man cover as you could hope for with Spidey battling a great villain, the Molten Man, and that Spidey web is on full display. Plus, you have this battle taking place in the atmospheric bowels of New York. The art is spectacular, don’t take my word for it just take a close look at this cover yourself. As to the price, if this were a Romita cover it would be double the price. You will never look at this cover in your collection and be disappointed with it. Cap and Destroyer kicking Nazi butt Invaders #18 Cover by Gil Kane Cap in full action mode. Gil Kane does a great job of capturing the intensity of Captain America in battle mode. Having the Destroyer, a hero from the Golden Age, is a rare treat for art collectors. This is his first appearance after 30 years away. Truly a wonderful cover that in auction nowadays would clearly sell for more than the asking price. At least that’s what I’ve been noticing. If you want a great battle cover from the 70’s featuring one of our greatest heroes, Captain America, then this one's for you. In the first issue he meets up with Man-Thing who you see on this page. Pages from number one issues are crazy hot at this time. This title ran for a decade and 100 issues. I was a bigger fan of this title growing up then the team up title, that’s because I loved the Thing so much. Ulik the Troll, and Thor’s main nemesis, is wielding both his Mallet and Mighty Mjolnir, which he captured from Thor in the last issue. Thor, of course, came back and reclaimed it in the last panel. Considering we just had a Thor splash sell for $100,000 this seems very reasonable. I’ve been seeing some Thor small sized pages sell for $15,000 to $20,000. The Fourteenth California Comic Convention ( CalComicCon ) will be held on Sunday, January 26th 2020. The show will be held in Orange County in Costa Mesa, held just miles from Disneyland and other attractions. We will continue to have a raffle that will have CGC graded comics, original artwork and sketches by guest artists. This year our show will be at the Westin South Coast plaza and we will have a Saturday Comic Swap and artist reception on Saturday the 25th. For more information see web-site: California Comic Convention All paid admissions will receive a raffle ticket, extra ticket can be purchased at the show. Advance purchases will get three tickets, with a chance at a special online ticket holder only raffle. CGC will again be taking comic submissions and doing signature witnessing. This year the California Comic Convention will continue to place emphasis on vintage comic books. see dealers list and pics from past shows. Dealers and collectors from all over the country will be at the show. The show will be held from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM; tickets are $20 and parking is $10.
