About Me

  1. Hi folks, Looking for some advice here - I bought this book the other week, thinking that it would grade highly. Seller described it as being in "perfect condition". The book is perfect except from the white bits all over the back cover. This is not colour rub, the paper is still perfect and is not worn in the slightest. It looks to me like a printing error... Anyone got any thoughts on how this would affect the grade of the book? Can it still get a 9.0 plus or is there no chance? Many thanks!
  2. Hello guys, ive got a copy of silver surfer #1 2nd printing that I want to send off to get signed by donny cates then get graded but I’m not to sure if it is worth the grading price because of the spine. would this effect the grade? mots hard to take a photo of sorry
  3. My first submission on this board. I really enjoyed looking at other grades. As I dig into my collection a bit deeper I want to see where some of my comics fit. I have never submitted to CGC but plan to in the next few weeks. I’ll start with this Incredible Hulk comic. Let me know what you think or if it’s worth sending on. I’ll keep it to 3 for the day though. Thanks in advance!
  4. I have gone through Overstreet's guide and I can't find any guidance there as to flakes. The flake on the bottom right cover is a decent size and I've put a dime next to it for size comparison. I know there are other issues like the subscription crease running down the center, but the staples are tight and in good shape, the book lays flat, and I would have it pressed before submitting it for grading. Any thoughts on grade and direction on cover flakes is much appreciated.
  5. Let me know what you think this comic would garner for a rating. Just looking to send in a solid first batch with some I will keep and some I will sell to fund getting others graded. Looking to thin the herd and protect my favourites. Thanks in advance.
  6. Let me know what you think, looking closely it had a little strain on the spine I hadn’t noticed prior, but I’d be curious what you think it would rate.
  7. Noticed a good portion of my comics from this era seem to be cropped. Cropped in a sense that the entire book was probably printed on the pages a lot higher up than usual. This isn't very noticeable with the contents in the book except for the bottom margin being larger but cover images look deranged as some of the top cover text is cut off. No portion of the cover is missing a portion of the image as I know that prior to printing artists have a much larger cover art that inevitably gets trimmed down. Would submitting comics with these manufacturing defects affect grade? Does this qualify as a physical defect?
  8. Books already there plus books that have already been mailed and are on their way.
  9. Hi All! I see the in-person drop off option for when participating at a con event. My question is, do walkthrough tier items get graded there on the spot if you make an appointment? Or will CGC then ship it to FL for grading, and you receive the comic back via mail? Thank you :)
  10. Relatively new to comic book submission and grading world...wondering a. If this would be submittable/gradeable b. Which category to submit under (comic or magazine) and c. If people have any advice or opinions on collecting advance copies of comics
  11. My collection is all modern age comics from the late 80's to early 2000's. They are all bagged, boarded and in boxes. I have an excel file listing titles, quantity and my cost (most of them were bought direct from Westfield Comics) along with a current Overstreet Price guide value. I'm not really interested in selling any at the moment, but am trying to gauge what a good cut-off value would be to have sent in for grading. I realize that it is subjective for each person, so I'm looking to see what others have done in the same situation. For example I have half a dozen that show of value over $100. Would anyone go lower than that, like down to $50 ? Or how about a run of 3-4 issues together that value out over $100 ? Thanks for taking the time to answer!
  12. This here is the prize thread for my 2019 Green Eggs Grading Contest! Feel free to make a donation, or even multiple donations. Please understand, you will be responsible for shipping worldwide, unless you state otherwise. As there are many contestants, I hope to see lots of prizes being thrown up. I will continue to update the 2nd and 3rd posts in this thread to recap what has been donated. What can you donate to the prize pool? Whatever you want, really. I wouldn't suggest offering up some really crappy stuff though, or things that are worth less than the shipping cost. I also would never ask anyone to donate multi-hundred dollar items, but that certainly has happened many times before. In the end, it's all up to you what you'd like to offer. Thanks y'all! -Andy
  13. Have boxes of copper age comics - lot of Spiderman and Wolverine, X-MEN, Captain America. Spiderman 300, Wolverine 1-4, then his own title, McFarlane's early Spiderman, etc. Early 80s stuff is rough - I read them more than once. Later 80s and early 90s stuff much more careful. All have been boarded and bagged since 1990. Live in Ottawa, Canada. Any idea if it's worth it to send the important ones for grading? Will I need to spend a mess-ton of money? Options? Advice?
  14. Hi all, I am a noob to the whole comic gig and I have a couple questions and concerns regarding fees and how they pertain to comics when sending into CGC to get graded. My first concern is why CGC charges so many fees in regards to grading or even pre-screens...they even charge you a percentage on books that they returned not graded (CRAZY)....who can afford these prices....even with my elite membership....I feel this is still a huge rip-off....but anyway perhaps I am missing some info on the grading process or the best way to go about this. I am looking to send in about 50 comics to get graded, I have no idea how much they are worth or how to fill in the online submission forms accurately to insure I make no mistakes....and most of all, how can I find out the how much the total cost would be if I were to send out these 50 comics before I actually send them out....this is all so confusing and the CGC website is so vague on explanation, especially to people who are completely new to this....if anyone can point me in the right direction or give me some clarity on these issues then it would be great help. Thanks in advance, -IRONICK
  15. I recently received a handful of variants of recently printed comics. All were supposedly unread and boarded and bagged when received. Most are perfectly flat. However, 2 of them are not flat - if you look at them from the top they appear like the pic attached. Both variants are great books in all respects - I assume would easily be 9.8 since they have sharp corners no spine ticks, etc. Will their not being perfectly flat prevent a 9.8 or is this type of issue considered a printing defect? If being flat is required for a 9.8, then I am going to send in for pressing since there were only 100 printed for each variant and I want to do everything I can to insure a 9.8. What would cause this type of issue? Is it a printing defect, or something that might have occurred pre-shipment or during shipping?
  16. Newbie here - I want to know if CGC does grading for interior pages or single page. And if a interior page witness signing can be done? I am asking for Coyote #11, Todd Mcfarlane's first interior work....thoughts?
  17. Change to CCS Screening Service Emails We're making a change to the CCS screening service emails. Prior to today, we have sent customers an email indicating which books were approved for pressing and which books weren't. This would typically include a fee breakdown for CCS. Moving forward, if books are submitted to CCS for press screening, customers will only receive an email when books are rejected for pressing. For example, if 25 books are submitted for press screening and five are rejected, an email will be sent to indicate which five books are rejected. All other books would proceed to be pressed at the rates indicated by the customer on CGC’s order form. This new change also applies to screening for restoration removal.
  18. I went to ComicCon in NYC this year as a grading n00b. I've bought graded books, but never had one graded myself. I bought one copy of every issue (including variant covers) of the entire John Wick series. I wanted to have them signed since both Pak and Valletta were going to be there. I never even cracked the books open, I bought separate copies to read. So, theoretically, the books were mint. I had them signed *without* using window covers. I don't know, I guess I didn't understand them or didn't think to do it or whatever. Anyway, they were therefore handled twice; once by each artist. Did I blow it badly? What are the odds these come back 9.8 or better? I'd guess they might have fingerprints on them, which could effect the grades? Any help for a n00b is appreciated.
  19. Does anyone know how to open a slabbed book? Is it something you can do at home or does it need to done professionally?
  20. Hi, I'm searching for a representative to come to my convention June 21-22, 2019 in Augusta Ga. I have multiple celebrities who need a witness for signatures and also a drop of for grading services. Please let me know if there is a local person who could accomplish this. Thanks!
  21. Recently acquired this great book and im fairly new to the grading process. My question would be what graded condition would this book be in roughly? And my second question would be how much would it cost to be graded? I have checked the pricing guide already and didn't receive a clear answer. Any help is well appreciated.
  22. A few random books that I am unsure of their grades, and if it would be worth the time/money. Sorry that my photos poor quality, but any ranges would be helpful. Let me know what you think these would be graded at, it would be much appreciated! Thank you!
  23. I've been meaning to post this for a while; thanks to @Point Five for giving me the springboard to finally get this down in writing: I don't think it's possible to overstate this. It gets to the very heart of why third party grading is so important. For those of you who weren't collecting before the advent of CGC, it was really, really, reaaaaallllly, really the bad old days. I had a good solid decade to deal with rampant and horrific overgrading and undisclosed restoration, and I'm incredibly thankful that I didn't have a lot of money to buy "big books." There are a lot of people who had to deal with it a lot longer than I did. As books got more and more expensive, and buyers were willing to pay more and more for them, the temptation to "fiddle" with books and overstate their condition...by a little or a lot...became much too great for much too many people. There are people that, to this very day, have not recovered the value of what they paid in, say, the mid 90s for a super key book that ended up being restored. One can be grateful that comics weren't *that* expensive in the 70s and 80s, but things were ramping up pretty hard in the 90s...$50,000 sales for key GA books were not uncommon, and five figure sales for Silver Keys were becoming common, too. And just because you bought from a "nationally known and respected dealer" didn't make you immune. The guys with impeccable credentials...well deserved, I might add...occasionally got stung themselves, unknowingly, and unknowingly passed those on to their customers. And there were (and still are) a LOT of frauds and cheats out there, like Gerry Ross, Danny Dupcak, and Daniel Patterson (the "esteemed" owner of PGX.) We are so very, very spoiled to have had a third party grading service...CGC...that has taken their job seriously, and their consistency over time has made the entire industry a far, FAR safer place to spend your money. Not only are there direct benefits in properly graded and restoration checked books, but indirect benefits, such that it's made everyone tighten up their own grading to a degree that we now quibble over QUARTER grades ("I think this is a 9.0." "Nah, that's no better than an 8.5!") You should see the brawls I used to get into with eBay sellers who sold me "mint" books that wouldn't grade higher than 6.0, or my Batman #11 (yes, THAT one) that was graded "VG/F" only to show up with every single page detached from every other page, with every page crumbling to pieces they were so brittle. We no longer have to have 10,000 separate grading systems, like in the past, and sellers are much less likely to play the "well, *I* think it's Near Mint!" game on 7.0 books. Everyone has a reasonable standard by which to judge, a benchmark, a foundation from which to start. "CGC says this is an 8.0. Ok, I see how they arrived at that." You don't necessarily have to agree...that's the important part...but at least you have a third party, unrelated to the buying or selling of the book, without a "horse in the race", that gives their unbiased opinion as to what the book you've got in front of you is...and that it is either complete, or does, or does not, have restoration. And you're not likely to hear the once common "NM?? You're nuts, that thing's no better than a Fine!", and vice versa, ringing through the halls of your local convention. It's forced everyone...willingly or not, happily or not...to become better graders, whether you're dealing with slabs, or raws, or both. And those who have refused, those who completely poo-poo CGC and third party grading in general, have been, rightfully I think, left behind. No, we are so far beyond the bad old days, it's like we went from living in caves to Metropolis, all in the span of 20 years. And for that, I am very, VERY grateful...and maybe everyone who buys or sells comics as collectibles should be, too.
  24. Hey all, hoping you can help clarify the CGC grading tiers a bit for me. I'm mainly confused about the Value tier. My understanding is that, being the max value of each comic cannot exceed $200, it correlates most with the Modern tier. However, I would think that they want you to send as many to them as possible to grade; yet am I to understand that it's $27 per book under the Value tier (when I'm sending 15 comics, as per the minimum) while it's only $20 per book when I send one (to be graded under the Modern tier)? If so, can someone explain the logic in this? Thanks, Chris
  25. Modern tier is greyed out...? I have been trying to submit a book from 1985 and the modern tier is not available. Has this been addressed anywhere else? Any help is appreciated.
