While not necessarily Superman titles, I do consider the Fourth World books Superman-adjacent, since they did kick off in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. So today, let's take a look at the series that laid down a lot of the mythology to come. New Gods #1 from March 1971. I think out of all the Fourth World titles, this cover is not only a classic, but probably one of my personal favorites as well. I love the oversized logo, the black and white background, and the oversaturated colors on Orion really pop. This was one of the last books that I needed to complete the run, and almost didn't get it. I was going to be out of town and unavailable during the auction at my LCS for this one, so I put in an absentee bid of $30 since the picture wasn't the greatest. Low and behold, the other on-line bidder stopped at just under $30, so it was waiting for me when I got back into town. Aside from the small mis-wrap, the books a stunner and I couldn't be happier. It was one situation where a low-res picture worked in my favor. The other (relatively new) big dog from this series is the 1st appearance of Steppenwolf, in New Gods #7 from March 1972. I picked this one up well before the movie hype, so it only cost me $10. I still can't believe how cheap the DC Kirby stuff was going for, not even 5 years ago. This cover is not one of the stronger of the run, as the coloring on this one just seems to mute all of the detail. At least Steppenwolf made the cover for his 1st appearance! Finally, we have what is my other favorite cover from this series... New Gods #11 from November 1972. It's a great action packed cover, and in my opinion, the only thing keeping it from legendary status is that the Black Racer is in the background. Imagine this cover with an imposing figure of Darkseid in his place, watching his two sons go at it. I realize that the Black Racer was there to amp up the stakes, but c'mon...the Black Racer? He's one of the few lost opportunities with the Fourth World, as far as I'm concerned.

For my money, Mister Miracle was the most successful of the Fourth World titles in both idea and execution. The deceptively simple concept, coupled with Kirby's out there early 70's imagination, led to some great stories. It took me a while to find a nice copy of Mister Miracle #1 from April 1971. I finally picked up this nice looking mid grade copy from a fellow boardie for a nice price. Look at that cover! How could you not want to pick that up! Well, if that one didn't entice you, than surely this one did? Mister Miracle #6 from February 1972. Hands down, my favorite Kirby cover ever. Beautifully homaged by Jackson Guice for Action Comics #708 from March 1995. One last favorite cover of mine is Mister Miracle #13 from April 1973. I love the twist on the old "damsel in distress tied to the rail road tracks" trope. And that Kirby train...classic! This run also features the 1st appearance of Big Barda in Mister Miracle #4 from October 1971. Will Barda and Scott ever make it into the DCEU films? Call me sentimental, but I could definitely see a high action, super-hero romance film being successful. Have we had one of those yet? Deadpool, maybe? Time will tell, but with the Fourth World coming big time with the Justice League movie, we can only hope...

With all the talk of runs vs keys, I've been thinking about what the most collectable SA Marvel run of say the first 20 or 30 issues would be. In some ways, it's a hybrid form of collecting as it's not solely focused on keys but also takes up less room than being a completist? For example, I love my early ASMs for the soap opera stories and Ditko art but they cost a lot in mid grade and there are lots of keys. On the other hand, JIM has great Kirby covers and prices are shockingly affordable. If you were starting out as a collector today, which main title from the early 60's would you put together? Where would you start and stop your run? What grade would you target?

Hi all, Need some cash for SDCC? There are a couple pieces I would love to have before I go into art collecting semi-retirement, and at the top of my list is a Jack Kirby Captain America or Invaders cover. Might as well aim high. Any Kirby cover with Captain America on it would also do nicely. Would also consider any splashes or Kirby pages with Cap fighting Nazi's. Art for Sale- Black Widow, Avengers, Perez, Gulacy, J G Jones Hi folks, I am doing a little spring cleaning and am offering these pieces for sale. So without further ado: Black Widow 3 (Variant cover): J G Jones revisits one of the characters he is most known for in this painted cover from 2014. This is actually 2 pieces- the Widow figure is on the one board and the bullseye and the cat is on a separate board (they were photo-shopped together during production). Modern sized art in excellent condition. and this is how it looks assembled: Black Widow pencil pin up: From the series that put J G Jones on the map, this penciled piece was originally published in a Wizard magazine and has many of the elements from that story arc, including Natasha, Yelena and Daredevil. This may have been in consideration to be used as a cover, I don’t remember. Here is a beautiful Paul Gulacy piece. This is the cover to Blue Diamond 2 from 1983, arguably the best of the series. This features Sybil Danning, a former “B” movie queen although this piece looks like it could have been done for the famed SQ Productions Black Widow portfolio. Modern Size art in excellent condition. Some of the background elements were done in marker, such as the docking station and have turned brown/purple. and the last one for now: Avengers 66 Cover: Here is a nice J G Jones Avengers Cover- this is from the popular Geoff Johns/Oliver Copiel Red Zone story line from 2003. This is fully painted art and is slightly oversized and in excellent condition. It features Captain America, the Scarlet Witch and the She Hulk. thanks for your time- hope to hear from some of you!
