Today, February 19th is Nostalgic Investments Comic Art’s NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Sal Buscema Bernie Wrightson Jack Kirby Featured Page: Michael Turner Witchblade Illustration (Very Early) by Michael Turner This piece is very special. Witchblade #1 made its debut in November 1995 and was so popular that Pittsburg Comic Con invited Michael to attend their 1996 show. On a big piece of foam core the show promoter had a number of artists draw the characters they were best known for. Years later, this piece was cut out from the rest of the board in order for it to stand alone as a magnificent, and very early, image of Witchblade. NEW ART FRIDAYS! I have been fascinated by a new book about original art. Comic Art in Museums (2020) is a historical approach to what has happened and a commentary about why comic art needs to be in museums. It is basically a collection of articles and essays from 1930 to 2018 about comic art in museums, comic art museums, artists in museums, and how the art world has struggled with High/Low distinctions. If you attended the Masters of American Comics show in 2005 you will appreciate how this discussion of "is it art?" has gone on for a long time. I appreciated learning the history of the comic art museums as well as struggling through the arguments of the place of comic art. I have been surprised that this has not been actively discussed on CAF or this forum because we seem to discuss this topic all the time. I get tired of talking about value. Instead let's have more of how incredibly beautiful and moving comic art can be. So here are quotes to start the discussion: Cassel (2003) "Comics are stereotypically an explicit narrative medium while the narratives of fine art are notoriously implicit." Laaniste (2002) "For the comic to work, it must be understandable...However...intelligibility in art is usually interpreted as trivial kitsch." For Sale! Published nude female and head study by Frank Frazetta. This piece is currently framed but the page roughly measures 2.25” by 6.5”. This is an undated piece but was most likely drawn sometime in the late 50’s possibly early 60’s according to Frazetta expert, David Spurlock. Published in Ballantine vol 4, the female figure can be seen on page 7 and the head is on page 86. $6,500 OBO via PayPal invoice. This WTB isn't picky to a specific issue or artist, but rather i'm open to any art (be it original pencils/inks or color guides) from the X-Cutioner's story line. Priority does go to anything by Jae Lee. Covers or Interiors only, no original art done via commissions or any art that wasn't published in the final released story.
