Hello, I'm new on this forum but I'm a long-time collector of (primarily) Spider-man and X-men comics since the '90s. I have an extensive collection of bronze and copper age comics of these series' but only more recently have my interests started to seriously turn towards the Silver Age so I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can. I of course have been doing and plan on continuing to do my own research on this era of comics but I was curious what people's thoughts here are on collecting low-grade copies and possibly even low grade purple label copies of things like AF 15, ASM 1, or X-Men 1 which to me (and I know for many others) are kind of "grail" comics to own in most any condition. Just looking at eBay prices and sold listings there is quite a bit of data for blue labels in all sorts of varying grades but I feel a bit confused when considering purple labels and how they're priced. I understand this varies greatly on what kind of restoration was done and how much, but just as an example, I see in sold listings for restored a- 7.0 Purple label Amazing Spider-man #1 with "Moderate B-3. color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced, re-glossed, top-edge of cover trimmed" which sold for just about $10,000. A restored 5.0 with "Slight B-1. Small amount of color touch on cover, tear seals to cover and interior" sold for $9,000 And a restored 3.0 "Moderate C-3. colour touch, pieces added." sold for $6,000 which is the very lowest I can find in sold before getting into 0.5s with missing covers or pages and such. Just to contrast, I see a 1.5 blue label with it's front cover re-attached with tape that sold for nearly $7,000, a 4.0 blue label with no noted problems went for $14,000 and a 7.0 blue label with no noted problems went for $30,000. and just because I thought it interesting, a 1.8 blue label is currently at auction for $4,000 with 4 days left. I suppose I'm trying to understand what the price correlation is for these megakeys between restored and unrestored are, and whether certain restoration notes are more acceptable than others. How much *should* one spend on a low-grade purple label vs a low-grade blue label? Like that 3.0 which went for 6k. Is that a decent price for such a copy? Would that then mean it's comparable to say, a 1.0 blue label? And as far as I'm able to tell, would it be correct to say that 6-7k seems to be the floor right now for a complete ASM #1? Also, I'm a little surprised that 7.0 was graded a 7.0 with trimming as I would imagine that's far more destructive to the book than most anything else, or am I wrong? There does seem to be extensive restoration work on that book. I would imagine that the least amount of restoration would be better but perhaps the prices don't reflect that? I personally am not bothered with purple labels for the most part when it comes to these sort of megakeys and for some of them, like AF 15, they might be the only real viable entry point to owning a copy for myself and others just now venturing into the Silver Age world. I would appreciate any sort of help, clarification, advice, or even just commentary and opinions on this topic. It's been really fascinating to read and learn about all that goes into grading these highly sought-after comics. I hope to acquire at least one of these megakeys in the near-future and I'm just trying to learn as much as I can and be as informed as I can. Thanks. -

I’ve been a long time fan of venom. I bought his first comic and the first appearance of carnage when they came out, both still pristine. I’ve always wanted Venom’s first appearance but couldn’t afford the price when I was younger, and then I forgot about comics all together until recently. Now I see it and wonder if I will ever have a chance at buying a 9.8 at a lower price if I wait. Been looking for Stan and Todd signed 9.6s on eBay as well but the prices are going up so fast. Just not sure I want to splurge 4k. Still a lot of money for me although I could swing it. What do you guys think?

Just bought an ASM 300 cbcs 9.0 for a great price. The comic surprised me how nice it was. It looks really good, and hasn’t been pressed. The main flaw is the chipped lower left corner (pictured). Do you guys think this 9.0 grade is justified? I was thinking of cracking it, getting it cleaned and pressed and submitted to cgc. I own an Asm 300 in cgc 9.4, and this 9.0 one looks way better IMO. Should I bother with clean, press, regrade with cgc, or just leave it? Does damage like this get penalized harshly? I was hoping a cgc licensed grader could chime in here. Does this damage smash the hope of this book grading better?

First post so please be respectful as I will do my best to apply by the rules accordingly. Background: My family owned a book store in Trenton, NJ back in the 50’s. When I was a kid and visited my grandmother at the store I would run upstairs and go right to the stacks of comics (I remember them coming up to my chest as a kid; yes, 1000’s of them) and grabbing as many as I could to bring home for light reading and the proper care they deserved. The store eventually closed down in the 80’s, and I was “only” able to remove a little less of only one stack of comics overall and a couple of books of stamps. I remember clearly, pretty much everything in the store besides some personal items were thrown in a dumpster. It was one of the most heartbreaking things I can remember. I always wondered what could have happened if I was able to get ALL the comics out, what treasures would I have had and still had. Then I step back and count my blessings for the books I did save, still have and enjoy. Over the years I have sold (very rarely), traded and bought books to reinforce my collection. Personally, right now Im looking to overall lower the amount of books in my collection and replace them with the higher grade keys I always loved. So where I’m at: I’m getting tired of all the “fees” and games people play on online auction sites (personally I have 100% positive and hundreds of feedback to my handle) and I recently met someone on another venture that suggested I reach out and ask for help on the forums I want to correctly price the books I’m interested in selling accordingly not to waste anyone’s time, mine or the new owners’. I’m not the most tech savvy person so any suggestions of direction is welcomed. I’ve enclosed a few books that I “saved” as well as new ones I’ve acquired over the years.

All books are signed by Romita Sr, and some are also signed by others, including Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway. Romita's signature is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain and will now cost you $100 per signature, if you can get it. Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway signatures are $30 each. All books are from my personal collection and NONE have been pressed! I got this on eBay a while ago. Total impulse bid and was surprised about the condition when it arrived. Wondering if its been restored at all because theres some odd discoloration with the yellow on top left corner near Spidey's head. First time on this forum let me know what you guys think! thanks

So i found a second print of ASM #361 (first full app of Carnage). I knew that the ASM would be pretty valuable even as a second print. I was thinking of getting it graded and not sure if it is worth it. The ASM I would say is probably about a 7-7.5. Any suggestions?

Hey everyone! So I just want everyone's opinion on what the their idea of a grade would be. I would like to send something in for the Bagley signing but don't have much of his stuff. I was thinking of doing this ASM 361 with press added to it. I know the book is a little rough. Bottom staple is almost coming off and a tear in the back. Just looking to add to my personal collection, not resale. Just seeing what you guys think for grade and worth to sign and press? Thanks!
