  1. Introduction In April 2017, Image Comics celebrated its 25th Anniversary. To commemorate its birthday, a limited edition of 1992 Blind Boxes were produced containing a randomly selected collection of 25 polybagged Image comics. The comics included in these boxes comprised six different, limited edition, cover variants of the 17 new-for-2017 series - 102 in total. The 103rd (and final) variant was the Here's Negan Preview Edition, which was limited to just 500 copies. Of these 500, just 25 had an additional hand-sketched over-cover (which sometimes spills over to the back cover - see photographs) by Charlie Adlard. This is the rarest of all The Walking Dead comics. As of 11/12/2020 [dd/mm/yyyy], just nine (9) of these had been graded by CGC - 8 @9.8 and 1 @8.5 (7 Qualified and 2 Restored). There are no Universal or Signature series because none of the sketches were verified as required by CGC. There are also some blank covers which appear to have "escaped" into circulation. CGC will NOT grade these. This thread contains photographs and details of the known covers from this rare and tiny family. So far (as at 11/12/2020), we have located a total of 12/25 (plus a blank one): Character Rick Grimes (raw) Character Michonne (raw) Character Andrea: CGC #1238584001 (also pictured raw) Nine different zombies: the five CGC graded ones we have found are #1238584001, 1246666011, 1297002001, 1586358001 (signed by RK and with a Cliff Rathburn sketch on back cover) and 2105850016 A blank cover (raw) Please feel free to add any additional ones. Together, can we capture the full 25? More about the comic: The comic contains parts 1-8 of the Negan 'back story' from the Image + series of 16 comics. Parts 9-16 have never been released as a comic. The Here's Negan story is a stand-alone volume related to Image Comics' The Walking Dead, featuring the backstory of Negan. The story was initially separated and released into chapters consisting of four pages each, published monthly from 27/4/2016 within the Image + series. The completed version was planned to contain a total of 48 pages to play out over the course of a year. On 7/12/2016, in the Letter Hacks of TWD issue 161, it was announced that Here's Negan would be extended to a total of 16 issues. A hardcover version containing all sixteen chapters was released (in several variant covers) on 4/10/2017 to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the comic series Story summary (for the 8 parts in this comic): Chapter 1 Negan is in his garage where he beats a young boy at a game of ping-pong. Gloating over his victory, he challenges the boy's friends as they stand in shock. The defeated teen quickly runs away, humiliated as the others chase after him, apologizing for him being 'kind of a '. Negan sits back into his recliner expecting consequences when his wife walks in. The woman approaches Negan and berates him for cussing out the teens; their parents having just called her. She explains that he is seen as a role model and needs to act better or else he'll be fired from the school where he works as a coach. Negan explains he only cussed out one of them and that he was just kidding, he elaborates that he's just trying to be the cool teacher and that they won't respect him if he acts like he has a 'stick up his butt'. He points out that she should hear some of the stuff that they say. The woman tries to rebuttal this, but suddenly collapses to the pavement, Negan rushes to her side. Chapter 2 Negan hugs his wife on the floor and makes sure she is okay. A man walks up and Negan yells at him to call 9-1-1. Later at a hospital, a doctor arrives to deliver horrible news, to Negan and his wife. Later, while in the bed with another woman, Negan becomes distraught. When his lover asks what's wrong, Negan reveals his wife has been diagnosed with cancer. Chapter 3 After being told by Negan that his wife has cancer, Negan's mistress quickly becomes angry at him, understanding that Negan told her this to make her feel guilty, and ends the relationship. Later, Negan reveals to his wife that he ended his extra marital affair. Negan's wife quickly becomes angry and while Negan explains that he ended his affair because he only loves her, she expresses distress over the fact Negan chose to stay with her, "the sick one", over a perfectly healthy woman. Time passes, and the wife's state quickly worsens. Negan is then seen at a hospital bed, his wife now (presumably) living with the help of machines. As Negan is confessing his love and regrets to his wife, an alarmed nurse comes in and exclaims that the hospital has been evacuated, the area isn't safe and he must come with him. After refusing to leave with the nurse, because his wife cannot leave in her condition, Negan is told to save himself. He then looks at the window and is dumbfounded to see the chaos below him, as a car burns and a doctor flees from the dead. The apocalypse has started. Chapter 4 Negan continues to watch the outbreak unfold from the window of the hospital, and realizes that there's something wrong with the "people" on the street. He hears a sound and turns to the door to see a young man running past, and is instructed to run as well. He quickly shuts the door and blocks it with a cabinet. Negan then tells his unconscious wife that it's better that she's sleeping through the strange events unfolding and that everything should be normal once she wakes up, right before breaking down. He then hears a loud sound coming from the streets, prompting him to look down the window once more, only to see the situation has gravely worsened, with a larger number of walkers destroying a car, and bodies scattered all around. He then hears a sound behind of him, made by none other than his wife, who had died, and is now turned. She falls from her bed, and Negan then calls her by her name: Lucille. Chapter 5 Negan rushes up to Lucille to check on her till she looks up. Her eyes are glazed over, her nose broken from the fall. She reaches out and growls at him causing him to fall back in shock. After a moment of disbelief, he tries to talk her back but to no avail. Teary eyed- he plants a kiss on her forehead as her weak body lays flat on the floor. He walks away and leaves the room to find a survivor fending off an attack by two walkers. The survivor calls out for help as Negan watches. Chapter 6 The walkers grab the boy as Negan rushes in to help. He fends off the two infected with a fire extinguisher and is horrified at having to kill them. The boy thanks a shocked Negan for saving his life and offers him help. Negan asks the boy if he could put down Lucille for him and the boy agrees. After putting Lucille down, the boy returns and the two begin to leave the hospital. Chapter 7 Negan and the boy leave the hospital, and the boy says he needs to get home. Negan stops the boy and, argues that his house is probably too far to go on foot and offers him a ride home. As they make their way to the parking lot, they begin to bond, with the boy being quick to notice Negan's rude behavior. Negan says that he "traded in nice for funny a long time ago". He then goes on to explain to the boy that life is just a constant hunt for sex right before he stops himself. He asks the boy his age and says that his thirteen. The boy then asks if Negan's fine, because of his wife dying minutes before, and his weird behavior in light of that event. Negan reluctantly says he is. Arriving in the parking lot, Negan starts giving life advice to the kid, saying that is best for him if he waits to lose virginity using Moby as an analogy. The analogy makes the boy smile, and he talks about a girl he likes and how he thinks that if he could protect her from the events unfolding, she'll like him. The conversation is cut short by a walker that emerges suddenly and kills the boy. Negan watches angrily. Chapter 8 After the boy's death, Negan drives home. He is seen boarding up windows, and alone on the road afterwards. Time passes and a bearded Negan is seen stealing gas from a group of men. After clumsily threatening to beat them down, Negan offers to join them and use a car that he found with the keys still in it but with no gas. Negan notices a baseball bat that belongs to one of the men and remarks that it is nice. Afterwards, Negan and the men walk away from the car, having discovered that lack of gas wasn't the car's only problem, and Negan defends himself, saying that he knows " all" about cars, and he comitted an honest mistake. Time passes and Negan is seen getting along with the group he found, bragging about walker kills and discovering places with beds for them to sleep. However, Negan lies about his past, and says that he didn't lose anyone. At a fireplace, Negan is crudely talking about how he doesn't need overcompensation, believing his to be the mightiest. He is completely clueless about the herd of walkers closing in on him and his group.
  2. This inventory of rare The Walking Dead (TWD) comics was researched by a group of its collectors including @StephenWA, @Sensei Ryan and @BladeTX. While TWD comic #163 had a print run of over 730,000 comics, there were ten issues produced with fewer than 250 copies. This list identifies those ten comics as well as the other rare issues which include the TWD S cript Book and #2 First Printing which were the lowest-selling of the original issues. The inventory does NOT include rarities from The Walking Dead Deluxe (TWDD) series, issued from October 2020. That series also includes several "less than 250" editions, including TWDD #1 Second Printing Gold Foil edition (212) and Second Printing Red Foil edition (240) both produced for the Skybound Comic Vault Live events held on Facebook. The data included in this inventory is from a variety of sources, including Diamond, ComicChron, My Comic Shop, CGC, and members of the Facebook Walking Dead Comic Buy, Sell, Trade group. Comments and corrections are always welcome. Less than 250 - the rarest 10! 1. Here’s Negan Preview Sketch (25, each one has a unique hand-drawn sketch by Charlie Adlard on a blank cover). 3. The History of #FoilFever: The Walking Dead (TWD) Foil Fever started back in 2004 with the Image Vol 1 Retailer Incentive Hardcover (shown in the photograph below). These were sent to comic stores to promote the release of TWD Vol 1. We believe they were a limited edition of just 500 (LE500). According to Shawn @bigclutch Kirkman's Facebook page, "These are very rare". There have also been Chromium comics, such as one of the x20 TWD #100 variants and the Mexican La Mole Comic Con 2019 edition. But these are not officially #FoilFever Foil Fever 2020: There was much excitement in August 2020 when Skybound launched its #foilfever hashtag for the new Negan Lives! #1 sequel comic to TWD main series. The comic picked up the Negan story from TWD comic #174, where Negan had left to be alone. Before this, Skybound had produced other comics with #foil TWD logos, and in October 2020 it continued its #foilfever campaigning with issue #1 of The Walking Dead Deluxe (TWDD) coloured reprint series. This article captures all of the #foilfever comics as a master inventory for TWD and TWDD collectors. 4. I am interested in purchasing The Walking Dead (TWD) comics CGC-slabbed at 9.8+. I have all of the First and Second Printings, so interested in Variants, Convention editions, Wizard World editions and similar. I also like CGC Signature Series TWD slabs in any grade. I would especially like one of the x11 slabbed or x14 raw editions out there of TWD #116, Third Printing. Also, I'd love to acquire a Here's Negan Preview Sketch Edition (LE25, from the LE1992 Image 25th Anniversary Blind Box). Feel free to PM me if you have one or both of these you'd consider selling. Regards Stephen
  5. Following my journal opener which covered The Walking Dead #1, this entry covers the issue with the second-most variant covers (20) in this series - #100. The Walking Dead (TWD) issue #100 (July 2012) shipped with a total of 20 variant covers and had a total order of 379,000 copies. This made it the largest selling single comic of the 2010s decade, the #2 highest ordered comic of the 21st Century so far, and the #1 comic of the century for Image Comics. A special chromium wrap-around cover by Charlie Adlard priced at $9.99 had 31,000 copies out of the total order. This was the peak of TWD 'fever' before Season 3 of the TV show debuted. Story summary: The three Saviors seen in issue 99 are complaining about the plan to attack the Alexandria Safe-Zone at dawn. One of them says that he is going to head for an unknown man by the name of Paul, who's group is farthest away. The Safe-Zone citizens are seen praying for their lives. Spencer approaches Andrea while she is keeping watch on top of the wall. Andrea is reluctant to talk to him when he starts to mention her and Rick, possibly thinking he's going to act jealous, but he instead reveals that he's happy for her and Rick. Eugene is seen mourning over Abraham's grave, while Father Gabriel is in the church praying. Aaron and Eric prepare for The Saviors, taking an inventory of the Safe-Zone's guns and ammunition. While on the road, Michonne says that the group will not make it to the Hilltop community in time. Glenn is still optimistic about it but they stop the van for the night. As Michonne takes first watch, Rick thanks her for everything, and says they'll have to be on the road by dawn. Rick says goodbye to Glenn, and states that he is happy for him. Later, as Michonne kills a few roamers, Rick takes over her shift. Rick sits on top of the van, barely awake, when suddenly a man catcher is put around his neck and he is pulled off the van. The perpetrator turns out to be the Savior that Rick spared on the road earlier to deliver a message to Negan. He taunts Rick, before ordering one of the three Saviors accompanying him to signal the rest. The Savior fires his gun in the air. The survivors rush out of the van only to find Rick being held hostage. Before they can even get their bearings, a truck pulls up carrying a massive group of Saviors. A man carrying a modified baseball bat asks for the leader, so the Savior that captured Rick identifies him as such. The man introduces himself as Negan. The Saviors line up the survivors from the van (Rick, Carl, Glenn, Maggie, Sophia, Michonne and Heath) on their knees. Negan informs the group that he wants revenge for the dead Saviors that Rick and his people killed. Negan then dictates the terms for the group's survival; everything in the Alexandria Safe-Zone now belongs to the Saviors. Negan further states that there is a new world order and that Rick and his people now follow Negan or they will die. Negan then tells Rick that he is going to kill one of the group to show Rick's people that he is in charge. Negan introduces his weapon of choice for the execution: Lucille - a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. After a long narrative from Negan about who should be killed with Lucille, Negan randomly picks Glenn as his victim by playing a game of "eeny, meeny, miny, moe". Maggie panics as Glenn begs Negan not to kill him. Rick tries to intervene, but Negan snaps at Rick, telling him that there are fifty men surrounding them and they will all die if they try to stop Glenn's execution. Rick and the others remain silent and watch in horror and cry with bowed heads as Negan smashes Glenn's head in with Lucille. The first blow fractures Glenn's skull and pops out an eye (consistent with the TV show 7.01). Everyone cries, looking horrified and angry at Negan. Negan then taunts the still conscious and now brain-damaged Glenn, who reaches out and calls for Maggie. Negan then repeatedly and brutally smashes Lucille into Glenn's head, leaving a mass of broken bone, smashed brains, and spattered blood. Still crying for his friend, Rick angrily tells Negan "I'm going to kill you. (...) Not today, not tomorrow... but I WILL kill you". Negan gleefully tells him that he won't, as his best chance is right now. He challenges Rick to do so, though ensuring him that as soon as he does, the Saviors will kill the survivors on the spot. He also threatens to have his men gang rape Carl if Rick continues to act defiantly. After slapping Rick around, Negan once again reiterates that he's the one in charge now. He informs Rick and his group that The Saviors will be back in one week to collect half of everything in their community. He turns around, leaving the survivors with Glenn's mangled corpse. Comic variants: After #1, this is the TWD comic produced with the greatest number of variant covers - there are 20 variants as noted below in alphabetical order: 100 - Adlard and Rathburn, regular cover A 100 - Adlard variant cover 100 - Barnes & Noble Edition 100 - Chromium Edition (wraparound cover) 100 - Convention Edition 100 - Escape Edition 100 - Hero Initiative (LE105) 100 - Hitch variant cover 100 - Lucille Edition (a Retailer Initiative, LE500) 100 - McFarlane variant cover 100 - Ottley Sketch Cover (known as the 'Comixology' variant, LE500) 100 - Ottley Variant cover 100 - Phillips variant cover 100 - Quitely variant cover 100 - Red Foil Edition (LE250) 100 - Second Printing 100 - Silvestri variant cover 100 - Sketch cover 100 - Skybound Megabox Edition (the most-recently produced #100, December 2016) 100 - Third Printing (part of the six-part #97-#102 set showing Negan holding Lucille horizontally; the other five each present as Second Printings) Rarity: Of these 20 different covers, the Hero Initiative version is by far the rarest and most valuable with just 105 produced, each with a hand-drawn and signed cover. There are also a few, perhaps 10-15, blank covers which seem to have leaked into the market. CGC will not grade these as they are "unofficial". A separate book called the 100 Project was also produced showing each of the individually-drawn/signed covers. The next most-rare, at just LE250, is the Red Foil Edition showing Negan's baseball bat Lucille on the cover. The Lucille Edition and the Comixology variant (Ottley Sketch Cover) are also rare and valuable, with just 500 of each produced.
