Today, March 22nd, is Nostalgic Investments’ Comic Art NEW ART FRIDAYS! Featured Artists: Neal Adams Alex Toth Ramona Fradon Featured Page: Captain Marvel #17 p14 ( First New Captain Marvel) by Gil Kane There may not be a greater, or as important, page in the whole Captain Marvel storyline as this particular splash. Here’s where Captain Marvel comes back from the Negative Zone and dons the costume, for the very first time, that he will be forever remembered for. Thank god he finally discards that terrible green costume that not too many of us were fans of. I think a good part of his popularity stems from how great this costume looked. This really is an epic first appearance in the annals of Marvel comics. Featured Artists: Jack Kirby Doug Wildey Mike Mignola Featured Page: Green Lantern #56 Cover (Large Art) by Gil Kane If I didn’t have my large art Green Lantern cover, I would never give this one up. There are very few of these covers that have ever come on the market or even are in existence. Certainly not many that are this good. It also doesn’t get much better than having it drawn by Gil Kane and Murphy Anderson. To put the price in perspective, the last 2 wonderful George Perez covers sold for $288,000, one a Justice League cover and the other an Avengers. Last night a good, not great, Bob Layton, Iron Man cover sold for $82,000. Of course I can offer up many more examples both cheaper or more expensive but my point is you could spend a lot more money on other covers and not necessarily get the same visual impact that this cover will give you. Every panel is tremendous. Even his shield is on full display. These early pages in the Cap run are the most sought after especially with the Syd Shores inks that give it that Golden Age feel to the art. Though I’m a bit biased, he’s my personal favorite Captain America inker. That’s the size of large art pieces. Normally these splashes are 15”x10”. So the impact of seeing this extraordinary piece hanging on your wall is profound. This splash has it all; it features the whole team, and they are in the negative zone, which gives you all that black cosmic background that we art collectors love. You can’t even buy a great X-men Byrne page for this price. This is clearly better than most of the covers in the run. I hate to tell you what a great Fantastic Four cover will cost you nowadays. Cap and Destroyer kicking Nazi butt Invaders #18 Cover by Gil Kane Cap in full action mode. Gil Kane does a great job of capturing the intensity of Captain America in battle mode. Having the Destroyer, a hero from the Golden Age, is a rare treat for art collectors. This is his first appearance after 30 years away. Truly a wonderful cover that in auction nowadays would clearly sell for more than the asking price. At least that’s what I’ve been noticing.
