I would appreciate your reaction to a Howard Chaykin commission, and whether I am being overly critical or not. I commissioned Howard to draw the Phantom Stranger and Talia in a "Chaykinized" version of a scene played out in several Phantom Stranger stories. She is the demoness who keeps trying to seduce him, while he must remain "unsullied" or cease to be whatever-he-is. Howard is a master at drawing trashy women, and I figured this was perfect for him. When it comes to Talia, I think she is magnificent--pure Chaykin. I love how he portrayed her; how she is playing with his medallion, and even standing a little on one of his feet--all to get his attention. And most of PS is very, very good, right down to the gloves and sleeves. But then there is that jaw line, and to a lesser extent, the hat. Chaykin had a hard time getting PS's expression right (which was expected and the subject of emails). I'm okay with his final design choice. When he corrected what he did with the paste-over, however, it made PS look like his jaw was welded on. The jaw line looks over-sized, and seems to have razor stubble on it. (I'm not too thrilled with the paste-over either, by the way). Also, the hat isn't right. Fedoras and trilbies (like a narrow brim fedora) have curves in them to reflect some highlights, while the part which sits on the head is too tall. So, my basic question is am I being too picky? And if not, is this fixable? And if it is fixable, should he be willing to do it? By the way, I really like Howard. He strikes me as a good person as well as being a terrific artist.

Hi everyone, First, let me say that I am new to these boards. I didn't know they existed until recently. I am a Phantom Stranger fan, and I collect Phantom Stranger artwork. I am always on the lookout for interesting items to add to my collection, and I was wondering if anyone has any they would consider selling? If you would only consider a trade, and there is something for sale "out there", I would also consider buying it and swapping (I've done that). I prefer original artwork, but also buy commissions and sketches. My current unsatisfied obsessions are Bruce Timm and Howard Chaykin, but anything can interest me (more so on the published work than the commissions or sketches). If you have already posted it in Comic Art Fans or eBay (and the character's name is in the title or description), you can assume I have seen it and have passed it by (at least for now). PS is a unique character, by the way, and I wish he were better used in the comics than he is. Other characters focus more on trying to stop bad acts. The "classic" PS (not the Series 4 version) is more focused on trying to change a bad actor's motivation. That's got to be a tough sort of plot to write. Anyway, thanks for reading this. Rick

I regularly buy and sell comics, as many of us do, but I've come into a Phantom Stranger 6 from the 1952 series. Typically, I use completed eBay listings, as a guide, but eBay hasn't seen a copy of this book recently enough. It's rare I find something this scarce, and I would love insight, as to what other sources may be trusted, as a true market price. I'm not opposed to hearing opinions on a price range or grade, but I'd also like to find out what could be used in a situation like this. Is it better to just auction an item this rare and see what it does? I'm aware of gpa, but I don't have access to it, and I would ask, if it isn't reliable on a scarce book like this? The book is obviously low grade, but it is complete (I've counted the pages). The cover isn't detached, and there is a spine split nearly half of the way down. It's a pretty incredibly tight book though. There are other various condition issues with the water damage, smaller tears, and such, but the pictures should help clarify those. There are no cutouts or other major defects ( aside from what is in the photos) in the body of the book itself. This is my first post to any of the cgc forums, so I hope this is in an appropriate place and within guidelines. I'm just looking for some information and iddealy some new tools to be able to help myself in the future. If not, then I'm here to share this scarce old book. Thanks for your time!
