About Me

  1. Hi, all: I've consigned a large stash of OA to Heritage this week, with art from DC, Eclipse, Image and Marvel (and a sketch or two). With so many listings, I've decided to split my posts in two, this being part 2. All auctions end Wednesday, Mar 13th. Here's a brief description of the artwork, along with a direct link to the page at auction: Gary Kwapisz and Ricardo Villagran Airboy #44 Story Page 6 Original Art (Eclipse, 1988). This page from the story "Like Fathers and Sons". Link to page at auction: Gary Kwapisz and Ricardo Villagran Airboy #44 Story Page 6 Original | Lot #47125 | Heritage Auctions (ha.com) Dan Lawlis and Ricardo Villagran Clive Barker's Night Breed #16 Story Page 20 Original Art (Marvel, 1992). Creatures and monsters real and fantastic devour victims left and right, in this page from a story co-written by Clive Barker himself. Link: Dan Lawlis and Ricardo Villagran Clive Barker's Night Breed #16 | Lot #47129 | Heritage Auctions (ha.com) Tom Lyle and Ricardo Villagrán Skywolf #2 Story Page 6 Original Art (Eclipse, 1988). Horrific jungle-war action distinguishes this sequence from Eclipse's ambitious revival of Golden Age characters from the historic Hillman Comics line. The setting is the Indochina War of the 1950s. Heroic aviator Skywolf and metal-headed Baron Von Tundra (a purportedly rehabilitated Nazi) follow a treacherous jungle path while attempting an unsteady truce. Link: Tom Lyle and Ricardo Villagrán Skywolf #2 Story Page 6 Original Art | Lot #47136 | Heritage Auctions (ha.com) Mike McKone and Andy Lanning Fantastic Four #532 Story Page 14 Original Art (Marvel, 2005). Mr. Fantastic just wants to go home after the operation to replicate the accident that created the FF is scrubbed. Link: Mike McKone and Andy Lanning Fantastic Four #532 Story Page 14 | Lot #47145 | Heritage Auctions (ha.com) Yanick Paquette and Serge LaPointe Civil War: X-Men #3 Double Page Spread 16-17 Original Art (Marvel, 2006). Members of the 198 (the 1% of mutants who retained their powers post-M-Day) battle with Sentinel Squad O*N*E on the lawn of the Xavier Institute in protest of the Superhuman Registration Act that sparked the superhero Civil War. 2. I found a really nice copy of the Death of Superman TPB recently. It was so nice I sent it to CGC! Getting this back in 9.8 was a home run, this will also most likely be my final CGC submission for the year, ending a heck of year for the collection. Today is also the 30th anniversary of the release of Superman #75.
  3. Action Comics #683 (November 1992) is a book I'm quite fond of, not only for the cover art but also for the era the book was published in, collectively referred to in the hobby as Post-Crisis. I also call this time frame (1986-1992) Post-Crisis/Pre-Doomsday, or Pre-Death and Return of Superman, which is my favorite era of Superman reading material, focusing on great stories and character development for all the main and supporting characters involved. I did not start reading comics until early 1994; post Death and Return of Superman. One of the joys of finding the Death of Superman collected edition then was the discovery of the Superman continuity in the comic books and that Superman had been completely revamped in the late ‘80s, with a fresh take on the character and the universe he inhabited. Not only did I become hooked on the Death and Return of Superman storyline, I became hooked on the books prior to, it was like streaming a series online to catch up and follow a developing story. I would not get to find all of these Pre-Death and Return of Superman comics until after childhood. I would find issues here and there at a few comic shops, enough to fill in some story gaps or give me a general idea, but most places I went to rarely had any Superman back issues prior to the Death and Return of Superman saga. These books then became placed on a pedestal for me, thought of as ancient, priceless relics, which would take a lifetime to find. This brings me to Action Comics #683, a book I first found probably in 1995. I remember well pulling that issue out of the long box. The nighttime setting and full moon added an eerie atmosphere, seldom seen on Superman covers. Cover artist Jackson Guice does a good likeness of Superman, one I cannot get enough of. Childhood copy I was excited to see this cover for the first time; I was even more excited to find it was cover dated November, 1992. Why the cover date? The four Superman titles with this date include something special, a teaser for the next storyline, “Doomsday!” The teaser was in the form of the last page in each issue that month, a fist pounding through a metal wall, warning that “Doomsday is coming!” I only found two of the four Doomsday teaser issues back then, I did find the other two as an adult and I still search for them to this day. Doomsday teaser pages Those four wonderful covers dated November, 1992! In 2008 I found a graded copy of Action Comics #683 on eBay, for a BIN price of only $29.99 with free shipping! I bought it right away; it was also the first copy of this issue to be certified 9.8 by CGC. I was excited to finally have the first printing of this issue; my childhood copy was a second printing, something I thought of as a bad thing at the time. My graded 9.8 copy was the lone 9.8 in the census for a few years, then the book, along with the other Doomsday teaser issues starting taking off price wise. In 2016 I found a raw copy of Action Comics #683 for only $3.00, I couldn’t believe my luck, I also couldn’t believe how good it looked when I put it in a fresh bag and board. Around that same time I started looking for nice copies of the second printing, a frustrating search to say the least. Time went on and I made a few new friends on the Collectors Society. One such friend shared my passion for the Death and Return of Superman books. One day in 2020, my friend @Iconic1s submitted three copies of the second printing, and all three came back in 9.8 grade. His search was an exhausting one but his persistence paid off. I was floored when he told me he’d gift me one of these treasures. Holding both printings in 9.8 side-by-side was a dream come true. Denver ComicCon, 2016 An awesome gift This year I received a grading credit from CGC along with an award for Best Set Presentation for my Action Comics (Complete) registry set. I decided to pull a few books to send in, one of them being the copy of Action Comics #683 from the Denver ComicCon. The book came back 9.8 in a beautiful holder. I could sell one of my 9.8s for probably $100 or more, but I’m keeping both of them. To date, I have only seen a few copies of this book in the wild (I’m not saying this book is really that rare, it just rarely crosses my path), I have the luck of Forest Gump with this particular book, and I’m extremely grateful. What a cover! One more thing! My first graded example was certified on 10/01/2008. My second graded example was certified on 10/01/2021!
  4. Remember when Superman had a mullet?! From 1993 to 1996 Superman, a.k.a. Clark Kent, sported the mullet hair style. Depending on the artist the mullet varied in length. Superman first appeared in mullet form on the last page of Superman: The Man of Steel #25 (Sept. ’93). This issue was part of the Reign of the Supermen storyline, chronicling the four Supermen who appear after Superman's death and ultimately revealing the one true Superman. In Superman #82 (Oct. '93), the Reign of the Supermen ended, beginning the reign of the super mullet! I did not care for the look as a kid, I used to take my comics and place my fingers over the end of the mullet to get a glimpse of the short haired Superman, pre-death and return. Unconfirmed fact, I read years ago that the Superman creative teams decided on the mullet to match the look of Dean Cain, who was to star in the then upcoming Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman t.v. show (1993 - 1997). Okay, the hair is a little long in the back but I wouldn't call that a mullet. Check out Clark Kent with a ponytail. In 1996 Superman finally got a hair cut in Superman: The Wedding Album. Thank God! A wedding is a good reason for a haircut, also, if I remember correctly, Superman had lost his powers around this time, so it must have been easier to get a hair cut. Yikes!

Action Comics #29 (1940) CGC 3.5 "1st" Lois Lane cover. The colors on this copy are very impressive, still deep and vibrant, making it excellent to display. Case is in excellent condition, with no blemishes/scratches/cracks. This is a rarer CHECKING COPY. Checking copies were intended for the editors or "checkers" of ad copy, in order to make sure all ad copy & placement was correct. Checking copies would often have check marks in pencil on each ad throughout the book when confirming that they were correct by staff/advertisers. They would also often have a CHECKING COPY stamp on the cover indicating it as such (This copy has the stamp; see picture of front cover), and used in the actual process of manufacturing the issue before it was fully printed and sent for sale - Checking copies are often regarded as TRUE first prints of a book as they would have been mean before the complete print run was done to make sure everything was correct first. Checking copies were never meant for sale or circulation, only for the manufacturing process as a form of quality control. 11. Rare one found in a two-pack from Toys 'R Us. The other issue from the pack ended up coming back 9.8 but this one seems to have a few noticeable defects. Curious what other people think.
  12. NEWSTIME: The Life and Death of the Man of Steel I’m grateful to finally have this magazine in CGC 9.8, I’ve wanted it for a long time. For years there were only two 9.8s in the census, @Iconic1s has one, and that copy won’t be going anywhere any time soon. I also figured the other 9.8 more than likely wouldn’t come up for sale anytime soon also, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I purchased five raw copies from the Mile High Comics website in October 2021. After the discount code my order was about $30. Not long after placing my order I thought I should go back and buy more copies, but the price jumped to $40 a pop. All five copies were listed as Near Mint, they arrived safely. I picked out the best two and sent them to CCS for pressing in November 2021. Life went on and finally in September of this year I saw that the books had been marked received by CCG, after another month of waiting I finally got the good news, both copies got the desired 9.8 grade, all thanks to the press work done by CCS. What is this magazine? It’s creative standalone issue released with the Funeral for a Friend (World Without A Superman) issues in early 1993, simulating the fictional Newstime publication, a newsmagazine in the Superman comics continuity of the era (late 80s/early 90s), I’m not sure if it’s still in today’s comics. I found this copy a few years back, it looks really good but it has a few flaw that that keep it out of the 9.8 range, so I get to enjoy it as a nice reader copy. There are a ton of DC Universe references. The coverage and reactions to Superman’s passing. I found this National Whisper insert inside my reader copy, the obituary came with sealed copies of Superman #75. Where were you when you heard Superman died? My coffee table is on fire!
  13. My journey into this wonderful hobby began in early 1994, when I found The Death of Superman graphic novel at Kroger, I was 11 years old then. The graphic novel collected the seven issue storyline "Doomsday!", the comic book colors inside hooked me. I had heard of this “event” but I was so late to the party that it was over. The Death and Return of Superman story arc was a trilogy of storylines; "Doomsday!", "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen!", all ancient history by '94. After I got The Death of Superman graphic novel I searched out issues for "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Superman!," not an easy task for a kid with no job (or allowance 'cause I never did chores), who's only transportation were his parents or the school bus. I was able to catch up thanks to few Toys-R-Us trips, where late comers like myself were able to pick up various two packs and packaged sets of comics, with a lot of Superman books. I found most of the issues I needed for "Funeral for a Friend" this way. As I got more into collecting I decided I wanted to have the individual "Doomsday!" issues, even thou I had them nicely collected in TPB form, after another Toy R Us trip, I got all those issues from a box set. As I started accumulating price guides, poly bags and backing boards a monster began to gestate, who became concerned about condition and value. I then discovered there were actually multiple printings for many of these issues, and the first printings were more valuable! Each printing after the first edition was notated by a roman numeral, next to the issue number and price on the top left corner of each cover. The cover art remained the same with each subsequent printing but the title logo color scheme changed for each issue’s printing. After realizing this the 2nd, 3rd and so on printings I had were tarnished in my eye. All of my "Doomsday!" issues were later printings, and not worth the paper they were printed on, and most of my 'Funeral' issues were the same. As the years went on, and the prices went down, I replaced many of my later printings with first prints, recycling the paper rags I had before. Then CGC came along.... Around 2007 I decided to start CGC Registry set for this storyline, all 9.8, first prints only, yet by the early 2010's I re-discovered the later printings, becoming enticed by the thrill and challenge of trying to find these books in high grade. I love how unexpected all of this was, I know I never thought the later printings would ever be collectible, and I think it's safe to say I wasn't the only one. Here are my CGC examples thus far, keeping the thrill of the hunt alive. Updated 11/01/2019 Some of my childhood books also survived, thankfully.
  14. The sale has ended. Big thanks to the buyers and everyone who took the time to check out the art. Best, Gal
  15. Just finished prepping and packing up my first submission for 2023. These books will go to CCS first. Fingers crossed
  16. For sale are a varied lot of comics I had in my closet in a box;) There are 1st appearances, and not so first appearances;) some decent grades, some not so decent grades (readers;) Marvel's, DCs, Stars, I think a few Gold Keys bronze to Gold about 65 books total. First appearances, 1st Godzilla and Mothra in comics 1st Winnie the Pooh, 1st Heathcliff 1st Time Keepers etc etc Prices should be very competitive. To the best of my knowledge, none of the books have been pressed. I'd be pretty shocked if any were;) Shipping is $10 flat rate in the U.S. for as many as you purchase. I will use Parcel Select Ground Cubic (boxed), if it's less than $10, I will refund the difference, but I suspect it will be more. Out of the U.S. I will charge exact shipping. I accept Checks, MO's, PP or Zelle Pay. Payment is due within 3 days of the end of the sale unless we have made other arrangements prior to you posting a take it. 1st Take it in the thread or in a PM wins, I will determine which is first and if there is a tie, a take it on the thread will be given preference. I take returns for any reason as long as you notify me within 3 days of receipt and return the book within 7 days. I do not refund shipping unless I made an error. Please note these are very big pictures, so for the most part, the books should look a little better in person (at least they do to me;) I will probably split these into 3 sessions.
  17. HI, all: I've got some more exciting pages consigned to Heritage this week, with all auctions ending Wed, Mar 15th. But first, a few announcements: 1. I don't have any more Kieron Dwyer Batman pages. This weeks' page featuring Batman, Jason Todd, and the 1st appearance of Yoshio Tahara is the last one. Hopefully those who wanted a page from this issue were able to pick one up over the past 5 weeks. If you haven't, this is your last chance to do so 2. Folks like pages with Batman, Superman and Green Arrow, and they like Leonardi artwork, but for whatever reason, they don't seem to like Leonardi Batman, Superman and Green Arrow pages because they've been selling for less than I paid for them. So, I've decided to stop the bleeding and this will be the last week I'm offering a Leonardi DCUniverse: Decsions page for sale. 3. I've added a Spidey limited print, hand signed by Romita Jr (penciller), Romita Sr (inker), and Paul Mounts (colorist). Its a great print, with less than 100 copies to raise funds for the Hero Initiative. Check it out! As usual, here's the list of artwork, along with direct link to the page at auction: Mark Bagley Justice League of America #44 p18/19 DPS (DC, 2010) A ferocious double-page splash features Congorilla (Bill) battling Etrigan The Demon! 18. I decided it was time to get back on the saddle. I reactivated my CGC membership because I had some slabs that really needed new holders. I had been putting this off due to a very unfortunate experience I had two years ago with a ReHolder submission. I submitted several books in the spring of 2019 from my Action Comics set, these were expensive pieces from the ‘70s, two of them were pedigrees, one such book was also in a fragile first generation holder, all were in 9.8 grade. I packed them well, sent them off, then got a disturbing email several weeks later informing me that four of my books would not receive the same grade. The email came with pictures of damaged books that were no longer in their holders. I had to have them pressed and wait several months, it was not fun. Thankfully all books came came back in 9.8 but… Two of them came back in the horrible black and white pedigree label, that CGC has since improved on, and with big scratches on the holders. The other books came back with SCS. I’ll stop there, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth. Why am I trying this again? I guess I was feeling cute when I woke up this morning, IDK. So here it is, me giving this a second chance, getting back in the saddle. I probably won’t know how this goes for several months. I have only sent books in for new holders that really needed it and these two are no exception. See spoiler tag for Newton Rings and inner well scuffing! I’ll also use this journal entry’s comments section to notate my submissions to CGC.

    Can you spot the difference?

First time this has occurred to me...it's always that risk of it happening, it had to have occurred after grading cause they sure would not grade it that high if it occurred before the grade process. Oh well it is what it is. Also that is why you always scan your covers before sending them out to any grading company.... Nice signature matches the color layout of the cover....

  21. Listed two of my bigger purchases over the last year as it seems like my family will have to start looking for a new car soon (current car got its butt kicked in by the massive snow storm that hit Buffalo/Fort Erie). Was hoping to hold onto these longer, but since they are both series I do not actively collect it makes sense to move em to the top of my to-sell list in case of an emergency. Send me a message here if you are interested, as I'm much happier to massively cut down these prices for fellow boardies.
