Off the top of my head I remember:

Colorforms "creat your own cover" - a Superman issue (can't remember # with Lobo)

Pop-up diorama cover - Mighty Magnor issue

OK. I guess that's it. Now, can we develop this thread into a compendium of all comics that fit each catagory? Has it been done already?

Silver Foil

Colored Foil - Incredible Hulk #300

Prism Foil

Holo-Grafix Foil - Uncanny X-Men

Embossed - Fantastic Four (white, red)

Affixed Hologram Card - Uncanny X-Men

Die-cut comic book - Ferret (sp?) #1

Plastic jewel affixed to cover - Eclipso #1

Colorforms "creat your own cover" - a Superman issue (can't remember # with Lobo)

Pop-up diorama cover - Mighty Magnor issue

Glow-In-the-Dark - The Maxx, Ghost Rider

Polybagged - Uncanny X-Men

Multiple covers - Spider-Man, X-Men, Image

Regarding colorforms, what about covers with an art style different than standard comic book fare?

Sienkiewicz's "Kiddie Crayon" child abuse cover for Moon Knight.

Superman had one, also, minus the child abuse theme.

Were those gimmicks?

Were there "virgin" (absent logo) books back then?

What was the first "Virgin Variant"?

(I know, I should post this over on the StL Variant Mafia board.)

Metallic Ink covers ala Spidey #1 (Silver) and Spidey #1 Reprint (Gold), Hulk #377 reprint (Gold).

Also, weren't the 1st polybagged issues the Spidey #1's (where you had to buy 10 copies of the regular to get a polybagged one)?

Can we add the "sideways" books to the gimmick list? (The McSpidey/Xforce crossover books)

WTG, CHRISCO & CAP !

I'll try to stay on top of this thread with periodic updates like Paratrooper does in his Paratrooper Covers thread. Feel free to do so, yourself, a la Wiki.

(As a matter of fact, that's where I'm off too, next. There's, probably, an entry somewhere, of some sort.)

What were those Turok & Bloodshot embossed metal covers called called?

This is too big of a job. It'll take years. Carry on.

Sideways probably isn't a gimmick. Anyway, John Byrne did an entire sideways issue of the FF back in the 1980s.

How about Mad doing an issue back in the 1950s printed so it looked like you were reading it upside-down?

The only reason for poly-bagging was so that SOMETHING wouldn't fall out. Be it a card, poster, whatever. (BTW, what else was polybagged in with the comic?)

Were there polybagged comics with no inserts? Just a protective bag?

I don't believe we should sub-catagorize the multiples/variants. Yet.

As per the Valiant mail-aways, an old gimmick but a gimmick, nonetheless.

Same with Byrnes' 80's FF. Included.

I believe there was an issue of Ghost Rider/Spirits of Vengence/Midnight Sons that had a cut-out Halloween Mask in the centerfold. There were different masks also and possibly crossed over into other titles, Morbius maybe?

After Valieant had the mailaways they did another "promo". For a couple of months each comic had an individual serial number. Then they would post 10-20 serial numbers in the Valaint Reader and if you had the comic (like a lottery) you'd win a gold foil edition or some such.

Image had a bunch of gimmick books.....big art panels and crappy stories.

Oops that was just their regular stuff.

Okay, real addition to your cause.

Independant Publisher, Triumphant Comics, had Serial Numbered issues.

Also, would you count 3-D books? Which is really a nice gimmick and obviously been around for a long time.

1st chromium comic = Bloodshot #1 - a chromium card applied to the front cover

1st full chromium cover = X-O Manowar #0 - chromium used as the whole cover front/back one-piece

1st full holochrome cover = Ninjak #1 Gold - full chromium cover with holographic effect

(thumbs u

Chromium books are smooth, with a "clear-coat" finish... they're not embossed.
