What Comic Characters are in the Public Domain?

I'm sure Fox wouldn't shut down your website or send a cease and desist order if you wanted to use Simpsons characters for anything, even an "I love the Simpsons" site.

Superman should be safe too...and Batman.

These days I wouldn't believe any characters are in the public domain. Even if a lawyer told you it's a safe bet then someone would want to file suit... :screwy:

Public Domain ain't what it used to be...look at how Disney is scrambling (and donating millions of campaign cash) to extend the term of copyrights.

I overheard once that you CAN purchase rights, etc. - but it is expensive. Five Figures to start...

CAL doh!

I do believe Kevin Smith bought the rights to Sub Mariner a few years back......Am I correct ?

Wasn't that one of the joke articles in one of Wizard Magazine’s April Fools issues. hm

Just because something is in the public domain, doesn't mean there's a free-for-all for the character. Disney's early cartoons, including Steamboat Willie almost fell in to the public domain a while ago, but Disney owns the trademark on The Mouse. That alone could keep others from profiting on the public domain materials.

To my understanding, the original version of Mr. Justice is in the public domain, as his first appearance in Blue Ribbon Comics #9 wasn’t renewed in time, but again, that’s just to my understanding. I suppose now that you’ve helped put that idea in my head, that I should remove Mr. Justice from my post just to be safe. Thanks.

Probably any character published by Dynamite. Just a venue for DF to put out variant covers using free characters.

Well, perhaps not the Green Hornet and the Shadow, but I’ve come to understand that the Black Terror and Bart Hill Daredevil are in the public domain.
