Just came in today.  I'm astounded interest in these early SSOCs, especially the ones with Boris covers are so overlooked and cheap

They were pretty popular. And would you ever throw that out? Condition is another thing. these were meant to be read and they were read. I heard the same story from multiple shop owners. the conan guys kept their books and usually respected them. not bagging and boarding, per se. in the 80s and early 90s a couple of these collections would walk in a month, some guy who lifted a lot of weights, had been collecting them for 10-20 years, had just moved on from the genre, the wife wanted to de-clutter, etc., so they always had a steady flow of these books, which kept them cheap

Seems prices are quite strong right now - last night a CoB #1 9.8 ended close to 8k:

- and #20 ended at 4k - glad I don't have to buy them again!

Even #1 9.0 has gone beyond 1k:

That #1 does look quite good though.

Haven't been following much up on prices lately, maybe it's just me being behind - not going to sell anything anyway, the wife says I lack that gene lol

Btw, sent in my #1 reading copy a few years ago, and got back this one - but admitted, I never let the kids read it

Spoiler

Unfortunately now I no longer have a reading copy

Was lucky to find and add this book to my collection today - I know the centering isn't good, but it's the single highest graded and has pure white page - and beggars can't be choosers, lol:

Woo-Hoo! found a few for cheap that appear in nice shape, here and there, but mag's can be so misleading in grade sometimes lol

That's a great looking book!

Some of my photos were quite old - just took some new shots of #16, 17, 19 and 20 for my set, but they do get shrunken quite a bit for the set. Here the new pics are in large format - note that these were very hard to find without profound miswrap and with pure white pages:

Beautiful books. The BWS Conan run is in a class by itself.Love the notes from Max.I use to have a few FF slabs I got from him.Wish I had kept them even though they were in the 7 to 8 range.

I recently started dipping my toes into Conan collecting. I gotta say I have been missing out all these years. Great art and stories. Especially issues of Savage.  I bought these at my LCS to get started:

Yesssss. The art and stories of both Barbarian and Savage Sword Of blow away all other comics in my mind. I've got a pretty large collection with huge runs of the main marvel series like ASM, Hulk, X-men, Iron Man, etc, but Conan books are by far my favorite to read.

that miswrap is a bit jarring on such a perfect book

Can't have it all, I guess - I do appreciate white pages and when there's just one book, there's nothing to choose from. The miswrap is a reminder of how mags were produced back then, you won't see that among modern books, so you could consider it a feature illustrating production history ;-) Also it has taken about 22 years for CGC to grade just one mag - you risk waiting forever for another copy. Not many may have preserved SSoC #11 in 9.8 condition, this usually takes an adult buying the book in the 1970s and never reading it - kids and teenagers may be very fast getting these mags below 9.0, lol.

The Savage Swords were loved, true. I'm thinking there weren't many folks buying one to read, 2 to keep in a safe pristine for 45 years.

Conan 23 or 24? 23s seem to be 15-20% more expensive in the CGC 8.0ish grade I might want, but I like the cover to 24 so much more (I have a VG+ or so copy already though) --- it isn't just great BWS v. very good BWS or Buscema at his best, it is great BWS vs. Gil Kane mailing it in. I don't have 23, is the description of 24 as "first full" accurate, or is she in like half of 23?

You might need both - Sonja starts on page 15 in #23:

- but clearly the #23 cover totally pales compared to #24. The Sonja art and story are much better in #24, but of course it's not her first appearance.

From #24:
