Truly outstanding stuff, Dwight! Kudos!!  :applause:

On an unrelated and more somber note, what the heck was going on with supposedly puritanical America at the time that this niche sadism flourished so mightily?? This cover almost offends me in its sadism and misogyny, and that's hard to do: I am not among the easily irked or offended.  Sure, there was a worldwide depression, but if you didn't have money to eat, I doubt you were buying pulps monthly. And why would one blame women instead of bureaucrats or international bankers or any of the usual suspects? Really a strange phenomenon, truly.  :/

I think at this time Puritanical America was in full retreat. The Progressive assault on American values reached full throat with Woodrow Wilson in the 20's. None of this was shocking 10-20 years later when the pulps hit the stands...

I'm not sure what it was, but it certainly manifested itself in our fiction quickly - from the whole perils-of-Pauline needing rescue to Hostel Part 7. I feel in my heart that it must have owed to multiple factors - who were these readers? Were many of them returning servicemen who saw horrors in Europe during our brief but influential stint in World War I? Did some part owe to the depression that raged? I can't lay all that at the feet of progressive winds, but neither will I refute that a change in our collective mindset was definitely in play.

Before switching to the more familiar and wildly successful shudder pulp covers, Dime Mystery (Book) Magazine had these really cool book themed covers.

Covers of #1-4 by Delos Palmer, #5 by Rafael DeSoto, #6-9 by Walter Baumhofer

Those are cool. I have never run into any of them though.

Yesterday they had a new book fair down at LAX with about 200 rare book dealers from the US and Britain. It's a new venture and was pretty fun. It was held at an old restaurant called the Proud Bird where you can watch the planes land and take off. Nice location.

Anyway, besides the wide variety of old books (ranging all the way back to the 1600's) there was a neat variety of posters, paper and the occasional pulp. Mostly Argosy and a number of dealers with Sherlock Holmes in Strand Magazine. Even found one dealer with a few Arkham hardbacks. Lots of other paper material though and a fun show. The one pulp I took a picture of is below.tn_Tarzan2.thumb.jpg.f300fcccf33e363a1ce5394c0fc3a644.jpg

Yeah, pulps are off the hook Rick. Right up your alley. Just put them in a pretty mylar and enjoy the covers. They are endless. So many killer covers that I have never seen. In many cases, pulp covers are even better than comic book covers.
