Why I will never bid with HERITAGE again ,and why I think they are TABLESPOONS :

132 posts in this topic

Forgive me for a long post, but I think I'd like other people to see this...the other night, I bid on a Sensation #1 that was listed on Ebay. I bid through Ebay, not Heritage, at 6:16:39 PST. My bid was $2600.00 (no cents, because they only allowed flat $100.00 bids) A floor bidder bid the same amount at 14:26, 10 hours later than my bid was placed. I honestly thought I won the other day, as my name showed first.

When I saw this, this morning, (I was checking before selling my copy missing the centerfold) I was shocked to see it under "bids I lost" ...so I called Ebay, who told me to write to Live Auctions, I did so (see the response below).

I also called Heritage. The person at Heritage first told me that my bid did not register...then he told me that someone else (K****Y) won..I explained that was ME, that was my masked Ebay ID. ...and I could see my name on top on the bid page...

He said there must have been a glitch, that they were not showing me as the winner...Well, glitch or not, I got a note from Ebay, saying that HERITAGE chose the floor bidder over my bid. Now, while I can understand a tie taking place with the Ebay bid (if you bid at real time) coming in seconds later...but my bid was 10 hours before...so if they were tied, wouldn't it make sense to have the FLOOR bidder have to bid again? and if not, I should have won, first bid...

I'm just never wasting my time again...once before I got a batch of books that were graded F/VF and several were missing pages...I got an apology, but I didn't bid again for years...I'm done...and I just wanted to share...of course you need to make up your own minds, but...I wonder if some of the rumor's I've heard about them not wanting to sell a book that went too low, are true...this went way below their estimate.

The letter from Ebay...

Dear skypinkblu,

Thank you for writing to eBay Live Auctions regarding item number

170192319169, I would be happy to address your concern.

I have reviewed the bid history for item number 170192319169, 41372:

Sensation Comics #1 (DC, 1942) CGC Apparent VF. And I am sorry that you

did not win this item. There are many differences between bidding on

eBay Live Auctions and bidding on the main eBay site. It appears that

the auctioneer chose a bid by a floor bidder over your own.

This may have been caused by auctioneer experiencing technical

difficulty with the bidding console, such as a slow Internet connection,

that would have prevented him/her to obtain the absentee bids from eBay.

However, for more information on what had occurred, please contact the

seller directly.

It is the discretion of the auctioneer that determines if the Internet

absentee bid is accepted. If there is a tie between a floor bid and

Internet bid, absentee or live, the auctioneer decides the winner. If

you dislike the way that a Live Auction event is run, I would suggest

that you contact the auction house to discuss your concerns.

eBay offers several methods of contacting your seller. If you want to

ask a seller a question about an item you want to bid on, or have

already bid on, you can use our email forwarding system. To do so, just

follow these steps:

1. Go to the item page.

2. Click the "Ask seller a question" link. You may need to sign in.

3. Select the appropriate subject from the drop-down menu.

4. Enter your question, and click the "Send" button.

In addition, you will also find the expert and administrative contacts

for the Live Auction on the catalog overview page. Most Live Auction

sellers provide their specialists' email address and phone number. To

view the catalog overview page, click the title of the auction at the

top of the listing. You can also reach the catalog overview page by

clicking the title of the auction on the Live Auctions home page. To do

so, go to:

http://www.ebayliveauctions.com

If you have completed a purchase and are having difficulty reaching the

seller by email you may want to call the seller. To obtain the seller's

phone number, simply follow these steps:

1. Click the "Advanced Search" link at the top of most eBay pages.

2. Click the "Find Contact Information" link on the left side of the

page.

3. Enter the seller's User ID and the Item number, and click the

"Search" button. You may need to sign in.

eBay will send you an email with the seller's contact information,

including phone number. At the same time, we'll also send the seller an

email with your contact information.

I understand your frustration regarding this matter and apologize for

the inconvenience it caused you.

Sincerely,

Dean G. O.

Hello, this auction shows me as the winner, and my bid was made about 10

hours before the floor bid, yet, the auction is now showing in my non winning bids

section.

Have I won? and if not, why?

Thank you.

It would be interesting to know who the floor bidder was... hm

I have heard, that things mysteriously reappear on other auction sites...if anyone happens to see this book, I'd appreciate knowing...I tend to believe in people and hate to think that there is fraud going on...but this makes no sense...10 hours?

and my bid was obviously recorded...

Dirty dealings, Sharon. Seems to me I have heard stories like this before, when they think the high bid is too low someone steps in and matches, and later it appears on another auction site with a new (higher) reserve.

Never have bid at Heritage myself, the stuff tends to be beyond my budget anyhow, but this is quite the cautionary tale for the folks with deeper pockets.

I hate to think that way, Rick...but....it just makes no sense, they had my bid recorded on the auction, the bid was made in PLENTY of time to show...would seem to me, if this had been done honestly, the floor bidder should have been allowed to bid again...but not to win at a matching bid, that makes no sense...

It's like being not picked on a baseball team...;(

Could be possible to find it out.... from what I read there were only 15 floor bidders and two of them were board members, so maybe they have an idea what happened (shrug)

Sorry to hear this Sharon :(

Must be a real kick in the teeth, you did everything correctly, won the book fair and square and still somebody else gets it :(

Disappointing Alan, not the end of the world, I love comics, but people matter more, however, it just seems like something wrong is happening...

You definitely should have bid through the Heritage site. The buyers premium is more if you go through eBay and you're probably more likely to have something like this happen.

I didn't know about bidding through the site, till after the auction...but it still shouldn't have mattered, I didn't bid 10 minutes before, I bid 10 hours before...

The shocking part about this is that people continue to do business with Heritage in the first place. A quick internet search will show the way Heritage conducts business. It has been discussed on these boards numerous times. I made a decision a long time ago not to deal with them. It doesn't matter how good a deal I think I may get. They don't fit into my moral/ethical boundaries. Sorry you got screwed.

that just plain sux and is wrong. Sorry that Heritage isn't stepping up to make it right by you.

Thanks Collin...I just hope they know that a restored Sensation #1, 8.0 is very easy to track and if someone just HAPPENS to resell it on another site...I hope by posting this, people will watch out for it and someone will tell me...

If it was another collector who won and the person actually paid for it and took it to keep, then ...well, it's not their fault, and I hope they love it, and treasure it..but if I find out, something was done so a collegue or employee can resell it...I will be doing a LOT of posting...

Well, I believe in learning something EVERY day...I'll be joining you:) I'm planning to call them again on Monday...perhaps they will find they made an error and it all of a sudden is mine... :wishluck: But having people post on here in support, certainly would not hurt my chances;) ..although I'm getting kind of disgusted, and I may not bother, I guess they didn't really want me as a customer...:( and thank you:)

I'd watch it folks:

I'm not sure I understand that reference, Vince? I think CGC is honest...I have no problem with them, this to me, is a separate company.

Seperate company on paper. Heritage holds interest and shares of CGC if I am not mistaken.

That's too bad Sharon, you seemed real excited that you won it. Perhaps a call directly to John Petty? I don't know him so I don't know if that will help or not. I would also go up eBay's chain and complain. eBay should penalize Heritage and not allow them to use their site if they don't honor their bidders winning bids.

I don't know who John Petty is...? but I did write back to Ebay and ask that the practices be looked into...thanks:)

I had no idea the company was tied, Russ...I had heard some vague reference to it, but I don't really pay that much attention...thanks, if they want to pull the thread...well, so be it...

my sympathies- just yesterday i received some books from ebay that were severely overgraded even though it was a low $ transaction it really bothered me -enough that right now i can really relate to bad feelings about comic deals gone wrong! It is a bummer when something like this happens-- i see there were 3 bids on the floor so try to look at it this way - if your bid had counted it probably would have been outbid as someone obviously wanted the book-- i know it still sucks but it's not like you know you were gonna win anyway and it saves you $2600 to spend on a better book somewhere else! don't blame you one bit about being fed up with heritage because of this, to me they have that "we are so big we just don't care attitude" at times!
