Attic finds - still to be found!

We all hate the auctions with Grandma's attic or similar in the description.

 

But don't you all dream of finding some gems in an attic?

 

And don't you think that out of the billions of people in the world, there are still plenty of gems out there, hidden inside boxes, inside newspapers or just plain lost/forgotten?

I should clarify that I don't always buy what I find. Just the rare deal.

 

Typically, when a comic is found in an antique store or in a booth at an antique mall, the owner knows nothing but has gotten ahold of a price guide. They figure their book isn't perfect, but it isn't garbage either, so it must be the price in the middle.

Somewhere out there, there's a bunch of ashtray/matchbook people commenting on some auctions my wife has been posting on eBay. She's liquidating part of her late-grandfather's estate and one of the things he had was dozens of ashtrays from the 1940s-1960s from various casinos in Las Vegas and Reno. All of them in perfect condition. Did you know there's a market for that stuff? Her auctions had the legitimacy of lots of items and lots of low price stuff among the gems. But whenever we checked eBay, I always think of those Action 1/AF 15 finds we love to laugh at.

 

And on a related note, when we were going through the garage, finding all sorts of junk from the 40s to the 70s, I said, "It's too bad your grandparents weren't buying comic books. Do you know what they'd be worth nowadays?"

Another thing about attic finds is the ones where they just simply pitched out that old comic book box Darn Kids and there Comics they must have figured!

 

I know My Uncle had some really nice captain Marvels and others around in the 40 and 50 stuff.But hay they werent bagged and one day they moved from a house to other and they were just gone.He never could find them.Something tells me it was either his Dad or Mom possibly but he still talks about it now.

That picture was great.... I bet there are quite a few golden age treasures in someone's attic somewhere...not "a lot" but certainly "a few". My grandfather died a few years ago and he was a major packrat and had newspapers and magazines going back 40-50 years...not quite back to the Golden Age, but pretty far back...I didn't find anything of huge value in there (a few record and coins of minor value though), but I'm sure others will be luckier with their own attic finds.

Gotta get my 2 cents in on this thread; I am doing as much as I can to get to people who have comics BEFORE they want to sell them. It's a tough gig, as you can imagine.

 

But, I have managed to see some pretty sweet collections (some I bought, some not) in people's attics, closets, garages, crawl spaces, etc. What kills me though is the 'dead guy's books' collections usually passed down to the kids who have no interest in the comics but refuse to sell them because they are 'for the grand-children'. I always tell them, if you know nothing about comics you are doing a disservice to your family by keeping them, because even if you never touch the comics they could be stored improperly or in a hostile environment and your 'legacy' is in reality turning into a pile of brown/brittle recyclables.

 

And yes, there will always be forgotten comics in people's homes waiting to be found, although on a small scale. 100's of comics from the 40-50's? probably not; dozens from the sixties/seventies, you betcha! Happy hunting.

Probably about 5 or 6 years ago I was in the local comic shop and a the owner ust got a new batch of books in...that someone found in their attic. There were some key books most were mid grade but for the most part decent looking copies. I recall there being some Hulk Prototype issues, I think there may have been a few Hulk's between 2-6, Fantastic Four 2, 5. Tales of Suspense 39 (probably the nicest book of the lot possibly could have graded as a high as an 8.0, but didn't really look it over since I couldn't afford it.)
