The Mercenary villain in that issue was the imagination of a kid who changed / mutilated his megos to create new characters. He was the combination of the Green Goblins body, a Spider-Man head, and his throwing disc was a plastic poker chip! Fun stuff.

was he patterned after Nova?

I created Neron Man when I was in grade 3, which was 1973 to 1974. Nova came out a little later and yes there is a resemblance but it is coincidental.

Nah.

Nova has an origin similar to Green Lantern. My character.. I never really explained how he became what he is, he just is. That is what is kind of fun about being a kid, just do it doesn't need an explanation.

His helmet emblem is basically 2 triangles overlapped that I was doodling during math class as we learned basic geometry :p

My 7th grade character Nebulon obtained his powers from a meteor that landed on his property.  I used binder paper and ball point pen like the professionals use lol

I had that Spidey @Artboy99! And the Lizard too. Here they are with their 'buddies' from the 70's:

Yes....I'm one of those sentimental fools who keeps his old toys. They're real people to me.

In fact, they're so real to me that I made a comic about them. There are lots of in jokes here for my brother, who I made it for, but I think you'll get the gist. @Artboy99, thanks for posting your comics. It made me go look for these in the loft as I'd more or less forgotten I'd done them (thumbsu See if you can spot any notable characters. I think I was ahead of my time, as this is effectively Toy Story 20 years early!

That is great!

The Lizard must have been the greatest fighter of them all since he was manufactured with a fist!

:headbang: He even looks hard!

I can't believe I got so much technical detail right in the drawings (note that Neigh is missing his leg) and yet I couldn't spell Chronicle. And for the life of me, I can't recall what 'WD' (comics) stood for?!? 'Bobba Blue' was so called because we liked Boba Fett at the time and he was blue. Obviously! I think he was a foreign manufactured figure made to look like Darth Vader. 'Ni Li Boy' as we called him (an effeminate 'Nice Little Boy'), was Little Big Man. Remember him? 'Neigh' was his horse, who only ever spoke the words "Neigh. Neigh, d-neigh, neigh, neigh".

Who wouldn't want to be a kid again, eh? :cloud9:

Shortly before I left school, I got this published in my local paper, the Dagenham Post (note Doctor Who reference):

Alas, I did not take up graphical art as my future career :frown:

But I did win second prize in the 'design a poster for Asda' competition, where I stacked shelves to make money to buy comics during the sixth form! I mean, second prize? Come on!
