X-Men #1 Jack Kirby 1963 Original Art 2008 Sales History

57 posts in this topic

Does anyone know whether or not all of the original art pages for X-Men #1 (1963) were once held by one owner and if they're now being sold through Heritage Auctions?

In the past 6 months, an UNCANNY amount of original X-MEN #1 pages have been on sale via auction and sold as follows:

X-Men #1 Page #6 @ $29k

X-Men #1 Page #7 @ $33k

X-Men #1 Page #8 @ $26k

X-Men #1 Page #9 @ $16k

X-Men #1 Page #10 @ $20k

X-Men #1 Page #11 @ $54k

X-Men #1 Page #12 @ $14k

X-Men #1 Page #13 @ $14k

X-Men #1 Page #14 @ $10k

X-Men #1 Page #16 @ $19k

X-Men #1 Page #17 @ $13k

X-Men #1 Pagge #20 @ $31k

So, over half of the book has been sold in the past 6 months. Does anyone know if there's more pages floating around for potential sale or even the cover?

It's odd to see so many pages from such an iconic book sold with such frequency for this title and issue with so many pages suddenly appearing for sale given the one-of-a-kind nature of original art, the scarcity due to age (over 45 years old), and value.

Were some of the other pages sold previously?

It's AMAZING to see pieces of history like this available.

It's interesting to observe what the individual pages from the #1 issue sells for collectively, and seeing which pages pring in the most value (so far, it's Page #11, the 1st panel appearance of Magneto) and if the time of year and state of the economy comes into play in what they sell for. I also wonder if it's one collector buying it all as well... ? ? ?

Yes this is being sold by the person who owned the complete book, minus the cover. The complete book had been up for sale for a few years then traded hands a few times until the current owner decided to break it up. I know the owner was at San Diego this year with the splash page shopping it around along with the splash from Avengers #1. Not sure about any other pages. All I have seen have been on ebay (but didnt sell) then on heritage.

Update for the "values" of pages sold through Heritage Auction from X-Men #1 in thier February 2009 auction of pages #3,4,5 and 10 (re-auctioned from their previous auction offering of Pg #10).

So, apparently the complete book has been broken up and over the course of the last year through auctions, most of the pages have sold, but there's still a few more pages not accounted for that may appear for sale.

Was X-Men #1 offered for $1 Million as a full book plus cover or does the cover not exist? It's interesting to see this book, once held together by one owner now shared and divided amongst many... and if these pages are in the hands of fans, never to see the light of day (or made available in the open market for sale) again - - or are they considered in investment portfilios and will end up trading hands throughout the years?

Were these publicly available, or were they acquired offline? Given how red hot the market was, I'm surprised the owner sold them in a private deal rather than putting them up with the other pages on Heritage and seeing what kind of craziness would ensue.

Are all of the pages from this issue accounted for in personal/private collections, or are the four (4) remaining ones not tracked since last year awaiting eventual auction? Also, given the prices last year, and what some of the Kirby pieces are commanding now (an Avengers #1 page and Journey into Mystery #83 page, both 1st appearance key issues), are the X-Men #1 pages now considered at a much higher market price value since sales last year? Being the 1st appearance of the X-Men, should pages have a minimum $35k value? Or is the artwork considered sub-par by Kirby fans and valued less due to the aritstry than the mounument?
