What techniques does CGC use to discern "pressing" or "cleaning" restorations?

3 posts in this topic

I saw a gorgeous comic yesterday that was purpled because of slight professional restoration, identified as "cover cleaning and pressing." What techniques does CGC use to discern that either of these were done to the comic? This is a multi-thousand dolloar distinction, so I assume there are methods used to ientify these processes. How are they detected?

There are a number of tell-tell signs that a comic has been cleaned. Most cleaned comics display one or more of the following: Paper distortion, shrinkage, ink migration (usually red), unnatural coloration, unnatural paper texture, chemical odor, lateral edge defects that don't line up. Only after careful consideration of these points and dismissal of all natural causes will a comic be considered "cleaned". Hope that helps!
