The Unofficial Underground Comix thread...

Just full of UG related questions today!

I have another question that a thread follower could hopefully answer.

Does the "true first" printing of Mickey Rat #2 with the out of order pages, actually exist and how rare is it?

I have yet to see one come up for sale. If it does exist:

Does anyone personally own a copy?

Does anyone know what a fair market price would be?

That's one I still have yet to see myself.

The movie The Diary of a Teenage Girl has a scene of the main character wearing a Mickey Rat T-shirt. There's also a scene in a comic book shop where all the comics in the shop (on the walls, shelves, and in the front of the boxes) are only Underground Comix, my kind of comix shop.

That's not a comic shop. It's a store called The Magazine which still exists today on Larkin Street near Geary. Around a decade or so ago you could find really great UG's there for a song. I got my copy of C*nt Comics there for $2 (as well as many others, too numerous to recall at this point). They dressed it specially for the movie to make it look more like Gary Arlington's store, the San Francisco Comic Book Company, which had all that stuff on the walls and really all over the place during that time period, and really up until he closed the place.

But The Magazine is a real and extant place and if you are ever in San Francisco, I recommend it wholeheartedly. Be aware, though, that they mostly deal in Straight and Gay porn mags. If you are looking for something specific, ask at the counter and they'll let you know as they have literally tons of mags and periodicals that are filed away in locations that only the staff has access to.

Post a link, I don't know which Facebook page you're referring to as there are multiples.

Arnie, do you mean this one? The one you've been posting your sweet art in?

Underground Comix Group on FB

Guy, any other UG pertinent FB groups that aren't public that I should be aware of?

Sorry, forgot about responding to this question. I'm not sure which are pertinent, but if you search for Underground Comix there are several groups that show up.

considering there are multiple underground comix groups on Facebook, I have no idea which one you are a member of. You might post a link to the particular group you are talking about.

The creator of the Corpsemeat series, Edwin Pouncey was kind enough to answer my questions outlined below. For those who are interested:

I will try posting some questions I have that relate relating to UG/alternative comix within this general thread. Any help from the followers of this thread would be appreciated.

1) Corpsemeat 1 (Savage Pencil) - can anyone confirm that there is a second printing of this item or if there is only one printing? I have seen on-line that there is a supposed 1991 second printing in existence.

Answer: there are indeed 2 printings of Corpsemeat 1. There were 500 copies of the first printing of CM1.

The second printing was published by Shock as a double back comic in 1991 with Dead Duck 1. Copies published unknown. Dead Duck 1 was published by Sexy Swastika in 1988. 50 copies were printed and given to friends.

2) Corpsemeat 1.5 (Savage Pencil) - does anyone know which comic this mini was bound into? There is an on-line answer: a comic called Blast #4. I have also heard that is was bound into Corpsemeat 2. Can anyone confirm its origin?

Answer: CM 1 ½ was bound into copies of Blast 4. Copies printed unknown. It never existed as a stand alone comic.

3) Corpsemeat 2 (non-deluxe printing) - how many copies were printed?

Answer: There were two printings. The first printing was destroyed by the printer, who objected to the content for religious reasons. The second was printed soon after. A few copies exist from the first printing, but not many. Copies printed for both editions is unknown.

4) Corpsemeat 2 (limited edition French silkscreen printing) - what happened to the other 100 copies of CM 2, if 300 issues were printed but only 200 copies were numbered and signed?

Answer: Given to artists, friends of the artists, archived. These were out of series copies.

Tales from the Ozone 1 sold for $1,900 $2,270.50 w/BP) two days ago on Heritage. I have a cgc 9.6 also. I figure after the vig, I would have gotten $1500 or so. Save money, buy mine for $1300. I will trade for more in value (golden age Silver age Ugs art whatever in comics. Grade vg or better is okay)

Well, if we're going to illuminate and edify with what we think are new or more recent additions to the spirit of UG, allow me to nominate my favorite bit of comical wisdom of the current decade:

Funny, someone just pointed out that I started a Facebook group "Underground Comix" which I had forgotten, now almost 2,000 members later. What's your handle Arnie? I don't think we're "friends".

A little behind the scenes action of the set of Diary Of A Teenage Girl, thanks to a friend that works at The Magazine.....note the Crumb poster on the wall, in the last couple of shots, which is a commission and image that they've been using to promote the store for decades....they may still give away mini-posters of the image when asked!!!

I would anyone be able to help me out with avoiding some data entry? If anyone has an Excel (preferred) or Word based listing of the entire Kennedy inventory (by number and title), I would really appreciate getting a copy.

Just drop me a PM. Please and thank you, Dan

Question for anyone who may have invested in the Zap box set and also bought a copy of Zap #16 that was released through Diamond in recent weeks. Are there any differences between the Zap #16 that came with the box set and the Zap #16 that was sold separately for $14.99? I hadn't even thought of this, but I brought my copy into my local shop to show it to the owner and the first question he asked after I told him Zap #16 originally came with the box set and was later released separately was "Is this one a second printing, then?"

I'd hate to think it was a second printing, but I guess it would be a second print if they only printed enough at first to go into the box sets.

Yes, I read they included something additional in the recent separate softcover release that just came out, I believe it was something like a S. Clay Wilson centerfold. So I guess it's a 2nd print. Wasn't the one in the box set (my boxed sets are under several other boxes at the moment) a hard cover? I can't recall, but think so.
