Pre-Screening

20 posts in this topic

I was just curious about your policy on pre-screening comics. I noticed that a lot of dealers send in their modern comics to you as soon as they come out. However, does this pres-screening policy apply to Silver and Bronze Age comics too? For instance, if I had a run of Batman from # 180-200 and I wanted to have all the VF 8.0 and higher copies graded, would you do that? Additionally, could you please touch upon the cost?

Cheers,

Our pre-screens work as follows:

For the Modern tier we require at least 100 comics and all other tiers, at least 50 comics. You specify one minimum grade for the entire batch. In approximately a month they will be screened for that grade; those that meet or exceed it will be put in the specified tier at its respective turnaround time and those that are rejected will be returned at a nominal fee per comic (plus shipping and insurance). The fees are as follows: Modern $3 per reject, Economy $ 5 per reject, and Standard $7 per reject . We ask that all comics be in a mylar with a backing board and clearly listed on an invoice.

We would like all pre-screens to be on an invoice for proper tracking through the system. If you use an internet submission form, just complete it for the appropriate tier, mark it as a pre-screen, include a credit card and a minumum grade. You won't be charged the total on the invoice, instead the appropriate charges will be allocated as the pre-screen is completed.

Hi Gemma,

Are there any plans to lower the required number of comics for pre-screens? I'd be more likely to use the service if I could submit just 10 moderns at a time for pre-screening.

We have lowered the requirement to 50 books regardless of tier. Sorry if that's not quite what you were hoping for, but it makes the moderns a little easier to manage.

Do you mean mylar or will a poly comic bag do? Those mylar bags are expensive!

Do you charge the credit card, once the pre-screener has determined what books make the cut-off?

Which actually leads to another question:

Isn't it possible that a book could grade less then what the pre-screeners grade was if the other two graders, grade the book lower (thereby dropping the grade below the minimum acceptable grade)?

We prefer Mylars as they are more rigid and secure, but a poly bag or mylite would be OK provided it is not falling apart or sticky (as we do get those too!)

You can make an appointment to drop off or pick up books for any tier of service. We just ask that the appointment be made at least 24 hours in advance, as we are located within a secure facility. Also, if you are picking up a pre-screen, payment would be due and we would prefer cash, money order, or credit card payment to a personal check.

They can take up to 50% longer than the normal estimated turnaround time. Moderns take about 6 weeks or 30 business days and Economy/Value Tier take about 3 months or 60 business days.

So is there a charge for the books that pass the prescreen beyond the charge for slabbing or do you only charge for slabbing and the rejects?

There is no additional fee added to the grading fee of the books that pass the prescreen, only the reject fee for those that don't pass.
