It may sound obvious, but don't forget conventions too. Especially for buying artist direct. The "in person" thing works and sometimes you find something in an artist portfolio that you didn't even know was out there. Not the best way to find a specific piece, obviously, but some of my best buys have been convention buys, to be sure.
