noobie OA question #5= MUST OWN OA BOOKS!

8 posts in this topic

If you like a particular artist then there may be a book (or two) about them or reprints of their sketchbooks, etc. Or there could be articles in old issues of Comic Book Marketplace, Comic Book Artist or Alter Ego.

Ron Goulart also did a couple books that listed his view of the greatest comic artists with brief biographical info as well as pic or two.

If you are talking OA then you are talking about the artists themselves too.

You should read these books they are a great window into their world:

Although it is predominantly about comic strip art, this book by R.C. Harvey is a treasure trove that is lavishly illustrated. All of the art pictured within was shot directly from the originals.

Children of the Yellow Kid

The book is full of high quality reproductions of originals from the early comic strip masters like Alex Raymond, Burne Hogarth, Hal Foster, Milton Caniff, etc.,and continues all the way up to modern cartoonists like Bill Watterson. The artwork is so faithfully reproduced that you can see every pen and brush stroke. Although most of the original artwork is b&w pen work, all of the images are in full color so you can see every tiny stain and correction mark. I recommend this book highly.

Jerry Weist has released two separate Comic Book Art price guides which is great reading, it includes lots to read about original art, shows photos of art pages, mentions auction sales and also general pricing for many artists and the titles they drew.
