Readers' Condition Run of Tec 437-443 SOLD!

All Zonker's Stuff on eBay

From 1973-1974: The complete, multiple Shazam-award winning Manhunter series by Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson. In addition, this lot features some of the best Batman stories from the 1970s, and an unmatched selection of reprints from the DC archives. Apart from the small chips out visible in the pictures and noted below, all the comics are otherwise complete, with no repairs. All staples in place, holding everything together. No water damage.

Detective Comics #437. Jim Aparo created the Golden Age-inspired cover art, as well as illustrating Archie Goodwin's Batman -script "Deathmask." This was Aparo's first Batman story outside the pages of The Brave & The Bold. The second feature is the first appearance of Manhunter by Goodwin and a young Walt Simonson. Their story "The Himilayan Incident" won the ACBA Shazam Award for best short story of the year. Fine Minus condition: some minor wear along the bottom edge. Staples discolored but not rusted.

Detective Comics #438. First 100 Page Super Spectacular issue. The Batman story is "A Monster Walks Wayne Manor," by Archie Goodwin and Jim Aparo. The story is a sequel of sorts to the original Ras al Ghul saga from Batman #243-244. Manhunter returns in "The Manhunter File," again by Goodwin & Simonson. Reprints in this issue include Green Lantern by Gil Kane, the Atom by Gil Kane, Hawkman by Joe Kubert. The cover on this issue is by Mike Kaluta. Good/Fine condition: wear around the edges and 1/2 inch by 1 inch triangular piece missing from top left corner of the back cover. Staples free from rust.

Detective Comics #439. 100 Page Super-Spectacular. Neal Adams provides the cover for the Batman story "Night of the Stalker," with -script by Steve Englehart (his first ever for Batman) and art by Sal Amendola and Giordano. Also, part one of the new Manhunter origin "The Resurrection of Paul Kirk" by Goodwin & Simonson. Reprints include the Golden Age Hawkman by Kubert, Dr. Fate, Kid Eternity, and the Silver Age Atom by Gil Kane. Good condition: 1/2 inch triangle out at top right corner, smaller piece missing from bottom edge of the back cover. 1/4 inch spine split at the bottom. Mild staple rust.

Detective Comics #440. 100 Page Super-Spectacular. Jim Aparo cover. "Ghost Mountain Midnight" is written by Archie Goodwin with art by Sal Amendola & Giordano. Part 2 of the Goodwin & Simonson Manhunter origin, "Rebellion." Reprints include the original Simon & Kirby Golden Age Manhunter and the Golden Age Green Lantern by Alex Toth. Good condition: Wear around the edges, slight spine roll, 3 inch spine split from the bottom, and a couple of small tears on the back cover near the spine. No staple rust.

Detective Comics #441. 100 Page Super Spectacular. The Batman story is "Judgment Day," written by Archie Goodwin and drawn by Howard Chaykin. Manhunter returns in "Cathedral Perilous," by Goodwin & Walt Simonson. Reprints in this issue include Plastic Man by Jack Cole, Eclipso by Alex Toth, and a couple of Golden Age Batman & Robin stories. Nice looking copy, in Fine condition: front cover top right corner crease barely breaks color. No staple rust. Note the slight factory mis-wrap however.

Detective Comics #442: 100 Page Super-Spectacular, with a new Batman story by Archie Goodwin and Alex Toth (one of only a handful of times Toth drew a Batman comic). The 2nd-to-last Manhunter story is also new in this issue, by Goodwin & Simonson. Golden Age reprints include Simon & Kirby's Newsboy Legion, Jerry Robinson's Batman & Robin from Batman #31, Carmine Infantino's Black Canary from Flash Comics #92, and Dr. Fate from More Fun Comics #68. The Silver Age is represented by Murphy Anderson's Hawkman and Carmine Infantino's Elongated Man. Very Good condition: 1/4" x 1/4" triangle piece missing from top right corner of the front cover. No staple rust.

Detective Comics #443. 100 Page Super-Spectacular. Aparo cover. The ACBA Shazam-award-winning story "Gotterdammerung" is a 20-page Batman/Manhunter team-up by Goodwin & Simonson. Reprints in this issue include the origin and first appearance of the Creeper by Steve Ditko (from Showcase #73), and Golden Age stories of the Spectre and Green Lantern (the latter with Alex Toth artwork). Fine condition: Mild back cover creasing, small nick out at the bottom of the spine. No staple rust.
