You won't find it because there is no such guideline, written or not...you're fine to run an auction if you'd like, good luck! (thumbs u

I'm on the fence with this. I can see how the whole thing could go to the dogs fairly swiftly...and more of that around here we certainly don't need...but I'm not certain it's against specific guidelines.

If you were to list an item with a start bid and a 'Buy It Now', that would surely address the issue of stating a price you would accept? (shrug)

The biggest problem I can see is someone refusing to sell something because it ended up selling too low.

Yeah, you'd have to either start the bidding at the minimum you're comfortable with, or be ready to let the book go if you start the bids low.

I think it would take some work, would need to be carefully laid out ahead of time, and bidder names would have to be transparent but it would be a fun way for someone to blow out a large number of cheaper books. I don't like the hard end time idea myself, but it's really up to the seller to decide how to sell their books.

Yeah...that would be a problem, but that would always be a problem. The Seller needs to understand that's a possibility going in. If someone refused to sell the book because the final price was too low, then they would suffer the same punitive action for any other similar infraction.

A very important aspect, as per my listing, is that all bids must be posted (no PMs)...the whole PM thing would put too much potential controversy into the mix...

I didn't list a Buy-It-Now, but if that were a rule I'd be fine with it...

The only applicable rule/reg is #5. If you've ever taken Logic 101

A course I'd recommend you take BTW.

Just because something is not 110% strictly covered in the board guidelines doesn't automatically mean it's alright. We also need to use our brains, and look over the "accepted rules" of the board.

Is there anything SPECIFICALLY in the guidelines outlawing hardcore porn comic books? Do you think it's cool to post hardcore porn comics for sale? I guess so, right, as it's not specifically addressed in the guidelines.

How many auctions are currently running in the Marketplace? How many have run over the last year? Of those, how many were for charity/VCC?

Do the math Jethro.

That's the real problem, suddenly everyone thinks this is EBay and starts auctioning off everything and the forums "go to the dogs fairly swiftly".

It all comes back to "accepted board behavior", which if you were just to take a quick perusal of the For Sale listings, obviously does not include pure auctions. This is something the board members have developed over time, and is a common trait of all forums.

Can someone count the number of auctions currently running in the Marketplace, and a rough estimate how many (non-charity) ones have taken place over the last year?

I can't remember any, as the vast majority of people are smart enough to understand the implicit behavior expected, and play within those confines.

That won't happen...auctions would work for a niche, but straight listings are much easier for sellers to run and would remain the predominant format. Collector to collector internet auctions worked very well on r.a.c.m. in the pre-ebay days, and there's no reason to believe they won't work well here. I hope Nick gives it a shot as it would be fun, and I would encourage anyone else that's up for the challenge to give it a try as well. (thumbs u

I've actually got about a hundred+ BA/CA Hulks that might go over well via auction...maybe I'll try to run something the weekend of the VCC? hm

Vince, I'm one of the last people to support a 'free for all', but...

I'm stumped as to the down-side of listing twenty books in a tightly controlled 'auction style' listing as opposed to twenty books posted with an asking price.

Only one thread used, each book could have a starting price and a BIN, there would be a firm close on everything, all bids must be in the thread...

I'm failing to see much difference, but I might be missing something? (shrug)

So you really believe that you would be able to auction off 20, 30, 40, 50+ books in a SINGLE thread? I'm pretty quick, but that would be an absolute nightmare to administer. As a buyer, it would be difficult to know the current price for each book, as it's not being updated in real-time.

I envision multiple threads and far more "board noise" than you.

Also, each and every bid would drive those "auction threads" to the top of the forum, and soon there would be no more BINs on the front page.

The reality is that the boards are not designed for real-time auctions, EBay is.

I thought we had an auction recently to help Matt (Shiverbones) raise enough money for his surgery?

I guess I'm impartial: sure, it'd be fun to add a new dynamic to the seller's marketplace, but on the other hand, it sure seems there is the possibility for more static in the lines.

Somebody's going to take real offense.

As opposed to living in a Communist regime (as you obviously do) and not being able to voice dissent against unwelcome intrusions.

How anyone could believe that the boards are actually capable of handling real-time, multiple-item auctions, simply boggles the mind. We can barely make simplistic BIN sales work, and people want to slap 50 books in a single "auction thread"?

Good luck. lol

Yeah, those "charity/help out a board member with expenses/etc." ones fly under the radar, and I remember Arch making a similar comment regarding charity auctions when someone (Comicwiz?) asked him about it.

But that doesn't mean it's cool for personal gain, or that the board and CGC won't come down hard on profit-mongering auctioneers who simply want to transform this into EBay.

Here's how it would look...it's not bulky or confusing, one post has everything listed, there are links to scans, and using the once-twice-sold format the seller updates their thread with this post once a day (or whatever frequency the seller prefers) to update the bid status.

The type of auctions that we're talking about happened all the time on r.a.c.m. I don't see why they wouldn't work here. Have simple guidelines - if update the bid twice a day, or something like that - and have bids via PM only. The thread would get bumped, yes, but you'd only have one. It really wouldn't be difficult.

Instead of being obstructionist, let somebody try it. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. At least then there won't be 500 posts of noise, cryptic graemlins, and mindless bickering that gets nothing accomplished.
