Sub-Mariner #1 (1968): Looks VG+ or better, but there are pencil outlines/"embellishments" on the front cover (see scan). Still a nice looking copy of a cool '68 key!

'70s EC reprint lot: With a free bonus '70s printing of Crumb's Zap #1!!

 

These 9 EC reprints were produced by East Coast Comix in the early/mid '70s: superb production quality, and they're a cool, "old paper" alternative to the profusion of later ('80s and '90s) EC reprints. And the stories and art are first rate, of course. These were a big deal when they first came out, esp. at a buck apiece cover price (if you could find them). 10 comics total! Grade range on the ECs is G - VG or so; the Zap is Fine+.

SA Marvel reprint titles: Say what you will about Stan the Huckster, but a large part of his genius in the early/mid '60s (and one of the many reasons why Marvel went on to dethrone DC) was that he knew what his fans wanted, and that--contrary to the publishing axiom that "new = sales"--he basically kept the earliest "hero age" Marvel stuff (esp. the origin stories and earliest adventures of Spidey, the FF, Hulk, Thor, Avengers, etc.) in print, ad infinitum, throughout the '60s and '70s...in some cases reprinting stories that were only a few years old. In the absence of any significant back issue market, it was the best possible way to catch up with the embryonic Marvel Universe if you came to the party late and had no idea who all these stretchy guys, rock guys, fire guys, green guys, ant guys, and thunder guys were.

 

Here are some of the earliest "Giant-Sized" examples of that strategy, which are also an affordable, and "period correct", alternative to the hyper-expensive keys reprinted within them:

 

Marvel Super-Heroes #1: Cool one-shot from '66. VG. $15.

 

Marvel Tales #1: Rough, cover detached, inside is nice and 100% complete and readable. Fair. $20.

 

Marvel Tales #2: More great early Marvel reprints. G/VG $8.

 

Marvel Collectors' Item Classics #2: Early Spidey, FF, and Ant-Man reprints from '66. Cover detached. Good-. $3.

Fantasy Masterpieces: What started in the first two issues as a very early SA venue for reprinting Marvel's '50s and early '60s "pre-hero" monster stories became, with the third issue, a repository for classic Golden Age Timely reprints (especially Captain America!) featuring the stories and artwork of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Carl Burgos, and the great Bill Everett. Fantastic stuff, great reading, and (obviously) a cheap way to enjoy vintage Timely material (and lots of Atlas stories, too!) on old paper for a fraction of the price of the originals!

 

#3: Fine. $8.

#6: VF+. Bright colors! Date stamp, ncb cover wear, great Cap/Red Skull cover! $25.
