Dispatch from the Department of Useless Information – January 31st, 2021  

It has been almost a year since I did a deep dive into cgcdata.com to see what’s up in the Picture Frame census. Here's what I found this time:

Surprisingly, a handful of rare books in high grade have been certified in the last year - even romance and humor.

There are 12 books without a CGC 9.4 copy.

There are 5 hero books without a CGC 9.8 copy.

Some notable or surprising books without a 9.8 include Marvel Spotlight #2, Incredible Hulk #158, Iron Man #44, X-Men #76, Captain Marvel #22, Sgt. Fury #95, Sgt. Fury #99, Sgt. Fury #105

Marvel Spotlight #5 is by far the book with the most submissions (3,331). Hero for Hire #1 is next with 2,664 subs.

There are 41 books with less than 5 submissions total. And 3 books with only one submission each.

Of the 388 Picture Frame books, there are:
110 books without a 9.8 or better 
37 books without a 9.6 or better 
12 books without a 9.4 or better

I had a tough time believing my eyes when I saw this on eBay. And I was thrilled that it was still available when I navigated over to reececomics.com. 

I'm pretty sure I started chasing the 25¢ Picture Frame books in 2009. I already owned all the hero books but little did I know what a challenge it would be to find all the books in 9.4 or better.

As most of us here know, the romance, Westerns, and reprint books like SME #4 are not so easy to find in high grade. Turns out it just takes a lot of due diligence, a decent chunk of change, and about 11 years.

Just off the top of my head here...

I believe the last DD86 went for ~986 9.8 nine years ago. It went north of 4k Wednesday. ASM 107 9.8 never reached 1k other than one auction got close recently. The Clink copy more than doubled that high. There is another ow/w 107 copy ending tonight but I don't believe it'll get near the white pager. Just terrible timing to have 2 of the same issue same grade same auction.

Wowee.  I got $380 on the Link for this copy 11 months ago.
