Washtone / Greytone Covers -- All of them in one place. . .time to weigh in

Hiya Folks,

Some time ago, on the greytone/washtone thread, I promised I'd try to organize some kind of survey on which comics actually are washtones or are NOT washtones or ones that fit into some "grey" area (pun entirely intended).

 

At any rate, what I thought I'd do is begin by gathering all the washtone images (DC only) that were cited throughout this thread and then put them up for folks to see. I got a lot of help from Collectron on this one so hats off to him for that. Searching some of these out was not an easy task for either of us. In some cases, we needed to leave the CGC boards and go to obscure websites just to get a mediocre scan. SSWS 130 was strangely the one that required the most searching.

 

Here's the first order of biz. Everybody who's interested in participating in the survey should look through all the images and reply with a list of comics that you do NOT think are slamdunk washtones. For example, if you think Dale Evans #3 is a washtone FOR SURE, then you would NOT include that on your reply list, but if you think there's substantial doubt about it being a washtone cover, then you WOULD include it on your reply list.

From there, we'll compile the list of questionable washtones and conduct a survey on the questionable ones and what category THEY fit under.

 

Note: I know that there will be people who want criteria for what exactly constitutes a washtone, but for the purposes of this activity, I'm going to ask people to just go with their gut. Most everybody knows a washtone when they see one. You'd need to be a maroon to argue that GI Combat 83 is NOT a washtone. It's the ones that just don't seem to fit into that "slamdunk" realm that we're interested in right now. This will give rise to a survey of opinions. It is my hope that the results themselves will help define what is and what isn't a washtone once and for all.

 

BTW: I used images from folks who'd posted them in other threads. Usually that's OK with people, but if that ruffles anybody's feathers the wrong way for any reason, just PM me and I'll be happy to take it down.

Great job! This is a project I can get on board with.

 

Suggestion: post a separate list without the pictures once we get to the next page of the thread so we don't have to keep going back to that giant post that takes a long time to load. But it's great visual reference.

I'll edit my post later to include more. I'm not sure if it's my computer, but I can't see any of the images after G. I. Combat #44, but some others before me have included many books that appear after that issue. This tells me that they can see the images just fine, yet I can't for some reason. :confused:

Hopefully that'll help people to view the images in the thread a bit easier. Still not sure WHY that helps with the technical difficulties. . .but I did it on a couple folks' recommendations. So hopefully that'll do it.
