Washtone / Greytone Covers -- All of them in one place. . .time to weigh in

151 posts in this topic

Here's the list, but I'm not sure what I should do with it. Perhaps put it into an excel spreadsheet and use that to track which ones have votes against them? Can I use an excel spreadsheet and make graphs with them? I'm a total newb with compooters. doh!

I was wondering that as well. hm

This is what I see on my computer screen:

Mick broke his list up into 4 posts.

The first bunch is Adventure 42 to GIC 69, and GIC 69 is not loading fully and there's a big space of emptiness that could fit a number of scans.

His next post is GIC 77 to House of Mystery 85, and House of Mystery 85 is not loading fully and there's a big space of emptiness that could fit a number of scans.

The following post is HOS 1 to Sea Devils 4, and there's a big space of emptiness that could fit a number of scans.

His last post is Secret Hearts 59 to Weird War 28, and there's a big space of emptiness that could fit a number of scans.

It's obvious that my computer, for some reason, isn't loading all of the photos and names of some books. Hopefully, someone can chime in and fill in the missing books from my list. I would suggest copying my list and adding in the others, then re-posting it here.

Thanks,

Andy

Thanks John,

Nothing after Weird War #28?

Andy

Yep, just caught those thanks to your post. There were just 4 after that.

I'm working on an excel document that will list which issues gots votes as questionable...

Okay, here's what I've come up with:

So far seven people have chimed in with opinions: JohnT, Inaflash, Thirdgreenham, October, Buttock, AtlasFan, and Selegue.

We can solicit more input, or go with what we have. Here's what we have so far:

Unanimous washtones (books that no one had any problem with):

(worship) Fantastic! This is what I wanted to do, but I'm very glad to see that you're able to take the reigns. :applause:

I do wish more people chimed in, but anyone who wanted to read this thread and comment, could have. I'd say go with what we have. If more people speak up from this point on, then great.

The images are on page two, but they're a slow load even on broadband.

Not sure what you mean by black plate?

Black plate refers to the printing plate that carries the black ink on a press.

For typical comics, they used a simplified 4-color process. There was a cyan (blue) plate, a magenta (red) plate, a yellow plate and a black plate (sometimes called the 'K' plate).

What made washtones unusual is that instead of relying on those the little dots printed from those four plates to make up all the colors of the rainbow, the printers used individual 'spot' colours on individually tooled plates, which came off of artwork made typically with wash technique (hence, the term washtone). In a cover like GICombat #83, you can see the blues built up from a couple of blue plates, and at least one black plate (which gives the grays and shades.)

In some cases, these 'wash' plates were added to the regular four color process... giving what we sometimes refer to as 'partial washtones'.

Hope that helps.

Shep

Excellent explanation....I might add one thing....the Black plate is used to create grey by the use of what are called half-tones, which consist of tiny dots of black that can occur in different percentages of saturation...the higher the percentage, the darker the grey. GOD BLESS...

I'm still trying to figure out why GIC 75 and 76 are NOT on the "for-sure" list. Might be that somebody called them into question, but why those and not one of the other GICs from that run? Those two don't stand out as being any less washtone than the entire perty-thirty.

Guys, what you have going sounds like a great plan. Glad somebody's able to move forward with this. Took some decent time to accumulate all the images and post 'em, but not finding the time to do much more right at the moment. Thanks!!!

All it took was one person to question a cover and it isn't on the "unanimous" list. This doesn't mean it's not a washtone and or that it won't make the list once we start going through them more closely.

I'm working a 12-hour day today but I'm hoping to post the list of "questionables" soon, including how many people voted against them.

Right up front, I'll admit I haven't been following this thread lately so apologies if this is all redundant, but what about these? They all look legit to me.

Thanks Jeffro, those are on the larger list, but at least one person questioned them, so they aren't on the final list yet.

As we had 7 people choose questionable covers, we may consider taking off the ones that had 4 or more votes against immediately. Just a suggestion, as that would be over 50% of the judges. Then we could review the ones that had 3, 2 and 1 votes against. Actually, as I'm typing this, I may also want to have a discussion about the 4-vote ones as well. Ah, I don't know.....fellas?
