2009, Reflecting back ...

45 posts in this topic

Congrats to everyone on track to achieve their 2009 collecting goals! :applause:

For me, 2009 is the year that I officially made the leap from GA to OA. :acclaim:

I finally set-up my CAF gallery, began networking with fellow OA collectors/dealers and started fine-tuning my OA collecting focus-- for now at least.

I decided to sell several pieces bought long ago but that did not fit my long-term goals, and acquired a handful of pieces that did. My personal 2009 OA highlights include:

Splashes/Panels

Moon Knight #9 – Bill Sienkiewicz

Marvel Fanfare #51 (Silver Surfer) – John Buscema

White Indian #1 – Frank Frazetta

Strange Tales #160 (Nick Fury) – Jim Steranko

Magnus Robot Fighter #9 – Russ Manning

Nova #19 – Carmine Infantino

Death of Captain Marvel GN – Jim Starlin

Covers

Marvel Spotlight #10 (Ghost Rider) - Herb Trimpe

Captain America #225 – Frank Robbins

Hopefully, this 2009 momentum will carry into 2010 and beyond...should be a great ride!

A pretty good year for me. Starting out with this monster in January:

Silver Surfer GN cover

and finishing with some fun nostalgia from childhood just these past few weeks:

Marvel Team-Up 92 cover

and in between managing to pick up these magical pages from Paul Pope:

100% Complete Chapter 11

Enjoy!

This year I can't say I picked up any mind-blowing artwork, but instead I focused more on picking up some rather inexpensive but appealing sketches and commissions. I ended up going with a handful of comic book sketch covers simply because I'm out of space for framed art and these are an easy way to collect sketches.

Unfortunately, I'm still on the hunt for a nice piece of Robin/Tim Drake artwork but since there really isn't any demand for art of this character, I'm in no rush on this goal.

I just got in my last piece of the year yesterday, so now I can actually look back at what I got and got rid of. I parted with a couple pieces I thought I never would:

Josh Middleton Serenity #3 cover

Punisher #5 cover

among many others that I got rid of...(I just sold 10 pieces on ebay) And If not for two last minute splurges at the end of the year, it would have been a very light year in terms of buying... but here is what I added in 2009:

Two Steve Lightle Aztek The Ultimate Man covers (#7, #10)

Major Bummer #1 Cover

Vertigo's The Nobody Graphic novel cover by Jeff Lemire (as well as an interior page)

An interior page from Matt Kind's Black Widow story in the recent Strange Tales mini

A Stephen Platt Supreme Cover from Alan Moore's run (#44)

An unused (which is CRAZY) Batgirl cover by Paul Pope that measures a massive 19X24

An Arkham Asylum page by Dave McKean

and the most recent addition...Howard Porter's JLA #1 cover from Grant Morrison's run!

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=9015

I thought the Paul Pope would be my only major purchase of the year and I would actually keep some money in my pockets, but in the last 3 weeks the opportunity to purchase the Arkham page and the JLA cover both occurred and I just couldn't let those go. Every year I hope to spend less because my wants shrink, as does the actual inventory out there that matches my wants, and yet, things pop up... I'm really hoping 2010 is a lighter year though.

This was a great year for OA purchases, and I was able to pick up some nice pages, including an early Romita ASM cover and an early Trimpe Hulk cover.

I am scaling back considerably in 2010. In fact, I am going to try to spend no new money for the first half of the year at least (unless of course there is a dream piece that justifies breaking that resolution ).

OK, now I can finally play this thread since I've uploaded all my art for 2009.

I must say 2009 was a great art year (my pocketbook might disagree). I was able to cross off alot of stuff that were on my "hard list" such as an early Kevin Maguire Justice League Page, a Dave Cockrum Nightcrawler page from the miniseries, a bunch of Supreme pages from the Alan Moore run and a few of Mark Millar's Red Son pages (although I would gladly get more pages from these runs if I run across any).

I also run across alot on my "soft" list. Basically, stuff that I did not sought out to acquire, but once I saw it, I knew I had to have it, and quite a list it is!

1. Art Adams X-babies 1st Appearance Splash

2. Todd McFarlane Alpha Flight Ad Art

3. Dave Cockrum Uncanny X-men 121 Cover Sketch recreation

4. Ethan Van Sciver Flash Unpublished Cover

5. Original Catwoman Miniseries 1st issue cover

heh, I'll be posting an art day on the last 2 things soon after this post!

I didn't focus on OA a lot this year, but I got two very nice pieces:

- A Batman/Joker drawing from a Batman coloring book by Loston Wallace. Got it and had it framed and matted for my wife's b'day in January of this year. She LOVED it.

- My Bob Layton sketch arrived, after waiting for more than a year after I'd sent the check. Glad I finally got it.

As 2009 comes to a close, there are some incredible last minute additions on the CAF from some of the heavy hitters.

Fantastic Four #112 by John Buscema (Doc V)

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=590603&GSub=3039

Savage World by Frank Frazetta (Albert)

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=590614&GSub=16664

These might be the two most impressive pieces that I have seen all year.

I suppose my more notable purchases this year were:

Nice Finlay illo

A mess of nice Salinas strips

A pile of Toth art

Some 70's Hostess ads

I got my Peanuts ad piece back

Thor 314 Cover

and a mess of other stuff

Now that the end of the year is really here I can add to that list one final time:

Pogany painted book plate from 1910

Adam Hughes color convention sketch

McCay Rarebit Fiend

Herriman Krazy Kat Sunday

And just to add more content to the post (and because I'm off from work today) I calculated percentage of money spent by category. It's surprising to me to see how much of the money I spent is in certain categories:

Traditional comic book artwork (covers, splashes, interiors)

14.25%

Strip artwork (Dailies and Sundays)

54.30%

Sketches, Preliminaries and Commissions

3.56%

Illustrations, Advertisements and finished specialty pieces

24.91%

Non-original art (posters, prints, etc)

2.99%

I knew I had drifted away from traditional comic art to strips and illustrations but I hadn't realized just how much.

Wow, you guys got good stuff this year!

I found myself pretty much out of the comic artwork game this year (and a few years ago I left comics, partly b/c of CPR and restoration not being called restoration shenanigans), woke up one day and noticed the fever for black and white art...had left...I still enjoy looking here and on CAF though...but it feels good not to want nearly everything I see...partly b/c I see shenanigans with prices and sales, partly b/c I guess I matured and grew out of it...

I guess I finally found what I wanted hanging in the house...here's what I was lucky to pick up this year...thanks to board members and others... !

I tell people about my great great grandpa, Solomon, and his many adventures when one makes a comment...

Eric, I check your CAF gallery often, some similar tastes as me, always fun...seriously, you have some amazing artwork that I love viewing from tome to time!
