I would never do a Facebook, eBay, or CGC Board raffle and I am glad that they were outlawed here. 

Here is the easy scam to get rid of some suspicion. All you need are two people that are friends that live as far apart as possible.   I live in NY so let's say California is where my friend lives.  MOST know how this scam operates but here it is for the newbies that really have faith in humankind and think they have a shot. 

1. Hold the raffle.  Let's use a book worth around $900 - $1100 like ASM 14 in a 3.0.  (Can't believe how that book has recently popped - Check GPA) 
2. People buy in at $50 a 'ticket'.  When 25 slots are full, we hold the raffle bringing the seller, $1250
3. Now, to show that I am on the level I show 25 "unmarked" priority boxes where one of the books is the ASM 14, another is a book worth around $100, another is a book worth around $50 and the rest are filler books "valued" at $50 at cover price. Prepare yourselves for a LOT of drek. 
4. I said they were unmarked but I put a pencil mark where no one can see in the ad. 
5. After payments are received, labels are printed and everything is actually going out or blind boxed to raffle participants EXCEPT ASM 14. 
6. ASM 14 goes to my friend who participated in the raffle. 
7. My friend can either ship the book back to me which is risky OR he can sell the book himself. 
8. We split the money however the arrangement was made resulting in my friend and I roughly splitting almost $2000 for a $1000 book.  I am figuring $1250 in raffle money, $1000 auction or sale of the book - shipping fees, $100 2nd Place Prize, $50 3rd Place Prize, and cost of shipping. 

If anyone suspects anything, I can show documentation that all parcels were mailed out and that the winner that came forward does not live near me which diminishes but does not absolve suspicion. 

Rinse and repeat. 

That sounds more like the mystery boxes you see on E-Bay compared to the Facebook / IG raffles I've seen run.  Nothing is 100% but the format I used is very hard to cheat and gives you a very good chance of not getting played.  The house already gets 30% vig so it's not really worth it to cheat when you are making that kind of profits each raffle you do.

only difference is that people have less ability to manipulate March Madness and Super Bowl Squares. 

Assuming everything gets shared publicly and you can see peoples brackets and squares before the event, which itself the holder has no control over.

I was more comparing the legality issue with the various forms of gambling.  People have no problem throwing in $20 for superbowl squares but then it appears some people draw the line when it comes to raffles.  Both are illegal gambling but they are more in the grey zone in my opinion (everyone is free to have their own grey zone limits).

Well, that and what the "house" keeps.

Usually when entering a March Madness bracket where there is a payout, the organizer doesn't keep 1/3 of the fees. Additionally, March Madness, the Super Bowl, etc. are large events happening a handful of times per year (combined). These raffles occur simultaneously and repeatedly, amounting to huge fee-free gains.

Berkbridge had $100k+ in sales in a month and a similarly illegal/unethical method for getting around a 10-13% fee collection; this is nearly triple that amount of fee savings. And at the end of the day, there may not even be a real "winner".

I can't believe that 1) This thread was never/has not been LOCKED. 2) That i just spent an hour of my life reliving this mess. 3) How much my life has changed,yet ironically remains quite similar, with almost a Decade passing....that being said...I'm going SURFING...

Yeah it was a Frank aka Muscleshark / Frankenstein disaster over a CGC 8.5 Avengers 57 he cracked and tried reselling as a 9.2 back to me that i sold slabbed to him, then every excuse under the sun....mixed up books, mixed up scans, ect... I don't even know if he's still lurking around the boards. At the end he regraded it after having it cleaned, it came back a CGC 9.2 and he acted like he hit the lottery for the $400 profit he made. All the while i had just sold the White CGC 9.6 for $5,000 that i bought on eBay for $385 so i still chuckle at his "success" as i was getting rid of all the "low grade" books like this 8.5 i had obtained. I think i paid $20 for the 8.5 originally and he bought it for $150 from me...

Thanks for letting us know. Trying to sell you back your own book is a pretty nifty move though. Cajones.

There are ways to do pretty much cheat proof raffles online. I see cars raffled off all the time. Usually once someone raffles off a car it’s because they want way more than it’s worth. Pretty sure it’s illegal too
