Nice pick up. That's a Bill Ward cover signed as McCartney.

The Batman 125 has been kind of a Holy Grail for me. Glad I was able to pick it up. The Flash cgc is fun, but I'll probably flip it down the road.

Alright, a little bit of a story time here.  Infinity War opening weekend, I go over to my buddy's place to answer questions he and his dad have about the movie (me being the most avid comic book reader of the group).  My buddy has previously told me about how his dad has Silver Surfer #1.  Of course I'm skeptical, for all I know, they could be referring to vol. 3, issue 1.  Anyways, the conversation flips from the movie to the comic books and his dad starts to get curious about what he has.  So I offer to take a look and tell them what's what.  The books are stored in a closet, bagged, boarded, and boxed.  His dad pulls the short box on top (there's a few long boxes in there as well) and I start to take a look.  Immediately I notice a few books in mylar so I flip to those first.  The first book I see...Silver Surfer #4 (my best guess as a n00b collector, it looks like 9.0, no joke, looks unopened, no color breaks on the spine).  I flip through some more and there's an Iron Man #55.  (I would later find the SS#1 and an IM#1).  Apparently in the late '80s, he bought these books at a comic show and figured they might be worth hanging onto as investments.

Anyways, fast forward and I decided to look through my dad's own collection to see what he had.  Many years ago, before I could even call myself a collector (I was really more interested in the art/stories than complete runs), I had bagged/boarded my dad's books for the sake of protecting them.  At the time I knew nothing about silver age books (still don't as a matter of fact).  But spending time on these boards, I have come to at least identify some keys.  So what follows is what was in my dad's short box.  (apologies for the pictures, I didn't want to take the books out of the bags.  Wrinkles are on the bags, not the books.  I'm gonna have to remove them eventually and put them in mylar.)

The Standouts

My dad has always been a big Batman fan, so I wasn't surprised to find maybe 1/3 of the box was Batman, Detective Comics, The Brave and the Bold, and other assorted Batman team-up books.  I was surprised to find these however.  Strange Adventures because it was the only issue of that title so it's not like it was a book he looked for every month.  I spoke to him and he said the cover art and text caught his attention.  Also that it was a new character he had never seen before so he figured he would get it.  The Thor was even more of a surprising find because it's safe to say he was more of a DC fanboy.  The irony is I had actually been looking to buy a copy of this book (and FF66).

 

The Unexpected

Alright, all books were a surprise to find, but this was the most surprising, mainly because I had never even heard of the series.  (apologies for the photo.  I swear I took an HD copy, but the forums want to shrink it down.

 

War Stories

1/3 of the box may have been Batman, but another 1/3 was War stories.  I was looking at the covers when I suddenly realized they were Joe Kubert covers.  I may not know much about what's inside, but it's cool to now say I have some Joe Kubert covers in my collection.

 

The Fakeout

As I was sifting through books, I came across Star Wars #8.  And then a #7.  And then a #6...#5...  I started to think to myself, "wait a minute, did he collect the original Star Wars issues?"  #1 was one of the last books in the box.  I started to get excited only to have my hopes and dreams deflated.  "Why is there no barcode", I thought to myself.  A quick Google search revealed that what he had weren't 1st prints, but were instead 2nd prints (as were the first 4 issues, the rest were 1st prints).  But still, fun to have none-the-less.

 

There were other books in the box as well.  A variety of Golden Key books (Star Trek, Mission. Impossible, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., etc) and some Dell titles.  Most of the books are hardly worth anything from a monetary standpoint, but it's fun to think about my dad as a kid going to the corner store and buying some books for $0.10, $0.12, or $0.15.  My dad later asked me how much comics are these days.  He balked when I told him $3.99. 

Final thought, I always figure SA books are expensive, but I might have to fill in the gaps on some of these collections.  Maybe this will be what converts me.

I'm really stoked to have the Captain Marvel #2. One of my favorite Colan covers. Gambled on the Atom #1 and it came in a little under what I thought it would. At best it would be a 2.5 but that may be a stretch.Probably will flip it for something else pretty soon.

OH YES! Hawkman Vol. 1 is the best, Issue 7 is one of Murphy Anderson's greatest covers ever. They're all gorgeous. I'm lucky enough to have the whole volume. Nice covers.

27 years ago I became seriously ill and was medically retired (for lack of a better word). I also had to sell off a ton of my collection to make ends meet. It hurt to do so, but when you have no choice, what else can you do? I had to sell Brave & Bold 28-30 (fair to good), Justice League Of America 1-11 (#1 good, the rest fine to very fine) and many others.

So when I saw this for sale last week I did a lot of research on past sales of this issue. Wound up seeing a lot of issues worse than this going for much higher prices than what was being asked. Gambled on it and am pretty pleased with it. Not sure how long I'm going to hold on to it, but for now it is a keeper. I'm thinking 3.0.
