What is the best issue of your favourite titles and why?

I only collect Famous Funnies and I'm at odds to complete this set sometime in my lifetime. Sure there are some nice Frazzetta's towads the end, but my favorite issue is #62 from September 1939 and showcases some of Jack Kirby's earliest work (note the cover says The Lone Rider begins, that's JK's)and his first for the acclaimed Eastern Color run. It was an Ebay purchase for under $45.00 about 3 years ago. Picture023-1.jpg

The kind of post I love - a comic I've never seen before and esoteric info I'd never dig up on my own! Great book!

I agree, it definatly is a thread with a twist. It allows a cheapo book like this a well deserved kudo. Thanks for the kind response :hi:

Lookin' for a Famous Funnies 62 now...

I remember winning a literal footrace to snag my copy of #65. I beat a dealer!

there are only 4 graded copies, 8.5, 8.0 and 2x 4.5s. I saw that heritage sold a 6.5 back in 2002 must have been pressed to the higher, i'd sumize hm

ebay has a few, i think there was at least one acceptable lower grade. Hey there are only 2 graded #65s, my 6.5 and another 6.5, is that yours?

I'm a big ACG fan and love the 'Truevision' issues of Adventures into the Unknown, but #27 (1/52) also ranks quite high as it has two (is a 52-pager) stories by an artist I admire greatly whose ACG work is all I know of him: George Carl Wilhelms. (reading online he also did early 1940s Fiction House and later Gold Key 'Twilight Zone'.)

That's now on my list! I've never heard of Wilhelms - thos splashes are fantastic. The first of those looks a little like Harry Lazarus.

The May 1948 issue of Airboy is probably my favorite of the run. A great Zolnerowitz cover followed by the best Airboy story ever drawn, by Fred Kida, makes it a standout in the series -

Gulacy and Steranko`s artwork looked like they were influenced by Fred Kida, isn`t it amazing how many silver and bronze age artists that we thought were so original were actually paying homage to the comic strip and golden age masters ;)
