Emma Stone to Play Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man

24 posts in this topic

"Glee's" Dianna Agron and Moon's Dominique McElligott are the latest two names to be added to the short list for the female lead in Marc Webb's 3D reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, says a report at Deadline, which also tosses in the out-of-left-field rumor that Phillip Seymour Hoffman may be up for the part of Venom.

The current list of rumored Spider-Man candidates now includes Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska, Lily Collins (The Blind Side, Priest), Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later, the upcoming remake of Fright Night), Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer's Apprentice, I Am Number Four) and Emma Roberts (Hotel for Dogs, Valentine's Day).

Though the Hoffman-as-Venom rumor may sound incredulous, it is possible that it is the result of some crossed wired. In the "Ultimate Spider-Man" comics, Venom is a scientific creation of Eddie Brock's father who, working with Peter Parker's father, created the suit in an attempt to cure cancer. Though it's pure speculation at this stage, it could be the elder Brock that Hoffman is in talks for.

Spider-Man enters production soon and is being targeted for a July 3rd, 2012 release.

I wish they would go with Gwen Stacy in this reboot. But I guess MJ has too much identification with the general public as Spidey's girl.

Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. Stone has been tapped for the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The casting continues an association between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the actress, who previously starred in Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland, all for Columbia Pictures; she may currently be seen in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A, and takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' upcoming Friends with Benefits.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "It's been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma's star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill."

Webb added, "The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde."

Emma Stone can currently be seen starring in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A. Next year, she will star in Warner Bros.' Crazy, Stupid, Love opposite Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in The Help, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel; she also takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' Friends with Benefits and will voice a role in DreamWorks Animation's comedy The Croods. Stone's recent credits include Paperman, Zombieland, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny, The Rocker, and Superbad.

She would've been perfect for MJ but Gwen (shrug)

The fact that it was MJ VS Gwen in SM#1 was the first thing that pizzed me off in the translation to the big screen. The second being the goblins flaming plastic costume.

I don't think that they'll ever make an SM movie the majority of fanboys will totally love because they try 2 appeal to too many different crowds, or mass markets which in the end ruins the picture. Period.

Now that I've seen her...looks like Spidey 4 will be a disaster doh!

Have these people that make the movies ever read - or looked at - the comics they are adapting?

Nope. And they don't care. The people who make movies in Hollywood nowadays are all business. They come from Law school, not the literary side. They just want to make a buck and could care less about the artistic integrity of the film they are making. The executives who are in charge hardly even read the scripts they convert into films, let alone any comic books.
