Proper UK newbie with L&K dilemma

39 posts in this topic

Firstly, I wish you all a happy different time zone.

Secondly, and please be gentle as this is far from my area, I have a #1 Locke & Key Signed Edition, foil stamped and signed 'Joe Hill wuz here' in silver pen in a big speech bubble with the date 2.4.08.UH (I think those are the last two characters) about 1" below. It was unread and sealed up from new with a backboard and that is within another clear wallet. It has a sticker acting as a seal on the reverse showing item came from thecomicbookshop.co.uk. So far, so meh. I understand.

The reason for my posting is threefold, both seeking help and advice from this august forum.

1 What is approx diff in value when supplied 'raw' over 'slabbed'?

2 Where is best place to list so that a 'real' fan/collector gets it?

3 Why has none of the 7 comic resellers in the UK I contacted returned my emails and why have two I phoned said, and I quote, ahem "Hill you say, never heard of him."

Take a bow UK comic/graphic novel specialists. (tsk)

Oh, this is an honest request. Damn my OCD, but I spent 2 days without trying to find this version of the comic. It's hard when there are, what 302 in the world? I collect Joe Hill books and I bought this as part of a deal with a dbl signed slipcased version of Gunpowder. I never thought about selling it, but I sure wasn't going to open it. As I searched and found how few there were I thought that someone who would appreciate it show be the next careful owner.

As I kept looking I saw the (recent for me) news about the Spielberg link-up and I thought that soon this might get a bit pricey for fan and would head off to 'investor' land so I thought I'd sell it now and let someone else smile that special smile.

I couldn't even get a level valuation - I found two sale listings - I'm sure you know where/who they are, and there's a gap in the middle.

It's been a real eye opener.

Apologies for the rambling, I'm unusually nervous!

I'll check back soon. Hope someone can help. I have images, but not the knowledge to post them.

Cheerio

Puritanical

PS: next quest is to offload a full set of 1st printings of The Umbrella Academy. Same deal, what can I say? I'm not a businessman - I just love books.

Nothing if the book is pre-signed. It would land in a green Qualified label and nobody would pay a premium for it. If you're going to sell it, sell it raw. And the best place to sell it would be eBay at a 99p starting bid with no reserve, just make sure it's visible in the US and Canada.

At a guess I reckon you may get £7 for it.

I've checked the description you mentioned, but unsure why the comic qualifies under your grading?

* Qualified (green) — A Qualified label is used by CGC for certified books that have a significant defect that needs specific description.

What defect is there? The silver writing on the front? *joke*

Now then. I trust you.

My copy is (with my book collecting grading head on) in Fine, unread condition. How that translates? I would be happy to send you pix if helpful?

As I mentioned in initial ramble, I wish for this copy to go to a real fan/collector before added $ speculation takes it out of their reach.

It would have easy to place on the Bay at a lowish start, want to do right by us real collectors.

Cheerio for now.

One last update:

I opened up outer pack without damage to readjusts original seal.

There is an unbroken, circular sticker - 20mm wide - which has silver background with a blue centre with IDW below a sketched lightbulb. Which I assume is it's original seal. Therefore, I believe I would be correct in stating the comic is unread and untouched since signing. How exciting.

Thanks again. Most helpful. So what I have (if my revised grading of M is accepted) would be valued at $125 tops? If 'slabbed' then value to approx $500?

I think I will have professional grading carried out so any future buyer has absolute proof of condition. I hope this bit is easy to do in UK. I can't stop thinking about about it.

Bit different from $10. Which is good - I parted with a chunk o'change to buy in first place.

It's not my grading, it's CGC's.

Like an unverified signature.

Yes.

Post a scan if you can. But it is 100% impossible for you to arrive at the SS 9.8 that newenglandgothic stated is worth $500, to get the SS distinction, an authorized witness of the Certified Guaranty Company would have had to have been present at the time of the signing and the book could not have left their possession until they submit it for grading. And it is not 100% impossible to get a Qualified 9.8 (valued by newengland at $250), but it is very unlikely. But if you post a scan, we can help you to evaluate the likeliness.

How do you mean?

I was referring to an earlier post of mine. Also, 'implications of that post either'? What do you think I'm implying?

I've only posted a couple of questions because I needed some advice. I took your comments on board. I made one comment with *joke* inserted after. That was after commenting on the difference in valuations put forward by other members.
