Comic Book Marketplace articles and letters

Great magazine, I been using these old CBM back issues and this CGC board to gain comicbook knowledge. :gossip: I still got a lot to learn though.

Love the mag. Was so disappointed when they quit publishing. I'm missing a couple issues.

One of the giant sized reprint issues with the Gerber stickers had an article index.

Worth its weight in breast milk. :cloud9:

Great CBM Story

Back in the early nineties the monthly LA comic show at the Shrine used to mainly be about comics. I haven't gone in years because it seemed like it was mainly about toys and porn the last few times I went. Anyway, one of the interesting anomalies of the show is that once a year they would have the show at an alternate (read nice) venue; usually the Bonaventure Hotel. I don't know why but suspect it had something to do with the Oscar Ceremony which used to be down there at the Shrine.

One year they had the show at the Pasadena Convention Center and calling Pasadena home this was a must attend event. There are three distinct things I remember from that show.

First, I met Gary Coddington who was apparently a huge Superman and Duck collector. We talked a little bit and I wanted to go look at some of his duck books for sale but not much came of that. I didn't realize what a big collector he was until I saw his ads in the Price Guide going back many years.

Second, I classicly let one of those books get away. In this case the first Superman / Batman teamup in Superman 76 I believe. A whole $125 I think, I still bemoan not picking that up.

Finally, as I was perusing the various comc displays this gentlemen comes up behind me and says, "You look like you have an interest in the kind of books I am writing a magazine about." He then proceeded to hand me a magazine. It was Gary Carter and he had handed me an early issue to promote CBM. I subscribed a short while later and then would stop to visit Gary every year at SDCC to say hi, he was a great guy. I would always tell him how as a kid I used to love his ads in the CBG which featured the Spectre on the masthead and comics that I could not afford!

Anyway, I treasure my CBM's don't have them all yet but have most of them.

CBM got me started on Golden Age and Precode. Learned a lot from that publication. Miss it to this day.

Same story here btw. Coming into this country, I had had no way to learn about comics pre-Marvel Age but by the luck of picking up a couple of issues for a buck or so at my LCS annual sale, I was hooked! Spent $$ buying back issues online and reading the mags when I was supposed to study for my comps then ensued the Synchronic collection idea and now, 10 years later and a couple of thousands of GA / Atom Age books later, I am still talking and learning about them!

Back in 1991 I was looking for Church Actions. A friend told me about Gary Carter, and gave me his mailing address. I mailed him a letter, asking if he had any Church Actions for sale. He called me with a list, and mentioned he had a new magazine out about comics. He sent me a complimentary copy, and I subscribed right away. I have all the issues Gary edited, and some with Russ Cochran at the helm. It was always a special treat when a new issue arrived.

I remember that the first issue was mostly ads, which was fine, as they comprised the finest offering of comics in one place that I'd ever seen. Dave Anderson had an ad with pretty much every Golden Age key, and Gary had an ad with multiple Church books.

Never read any CBM but have tried to track down some cheap copies in the UK, with no luck so far.

Have Dr. Watson keep an eye for them at cons. Some dealers show up with plenty of issues for $3 a piece or even cheaper these days for the later issues.

Shipping to the UK would be too pricey though.

Out of curiosity, is shipping from Canada to the UK cheaper than shipping from the US to the UK?

I think it might be more expensive.
