Anybody own or seen the book "The Nightingale"?

That's Kingman's typical style. He was incredibly prolific. books (all of Herb Caen's book on SF), fine art, postcards, airline posters, etc. you name it.

 

I remember that Johnny Carson was a big fan of Kingman and he mentioned the fact numerous times on The Tonight Show.

For folks trying to track down this "comic," an AP story printed in December 1948 states that Dong Kingman's "Nightingale" as published by Once-Upon-a-Time Press had a "first edition" of 5,000 copies distributed only in Westchester County, NY, newstands with some additional "pre-publication" copies distributed in "a school" by the New York Public School librarian.

 

The article states a second printing of 100,000 copies was contemplated to have nationwide distribution with a special emphasis on interesting grade schools in the comic, especially in Indiana, Michigan and "far western states" which had banned comics. Follow up "comics" by Waldo Peirce (Red Riding Hood) and Isaac Soyer (possibly "The Most Extraordinary Thing" or "The Snow Man") were also contemplated. [but the article predates when these things were to have happened, so they may not have occurred.]

 

The article also state it was also contemplated that Kingman would give an illustration from the "comic" to the Mamaroneck Free Library's children's room.

 

The article states Henry Stansbury was the force behind the comic. After finding his kids reading crime comics, he decided there should be good comics for him to read. He hooked up with Midtown Gallery, which represented fine artists like Dong Kingman and others, to create the comic.
