Legalities of comic cover/splash page re-creations

They don't sue because A. artists aren't making THAT much money doing it and B. because it's not worth the time and effort to sue them.

 

Same reason they don't say anything for artists drawing and selling art at conventions. Not to mention it's free PR publicity for them.

There is a certain, very popular artist who sells prints of original peaces (sometimes of mainstream characters) he's drawn at each con he attends. He told me he never announces what they will be ahead of time so the lawyers don't have time to issues a cease and desist. To my knowledge he has never been harassed after the fact.
