Books For Mike: Bronze/Copper/Modern

From Bill posting on the Save Superman Help Mike Meyer facebook page:

Just got back from Granite City and a long visit with Mike and his dogs Krypto and Dyno. I am not sure what he was expecting, but when I started carrying in boxes of cards and packages from throughout the U.S. and Australia, it was pretty clear that was NOT what he was expecting. He opened every package carefully, taking time to read the addresses, any enclosed notes and then admiring each item ...one by one. "Ohhh," he said time and again, "this was one of the things I had stolen," or "this is something I always wanted but never had." At one point he sat back and remarked, "It is so wonderful that people would think of me. I am not a celebrity." There were very few duplicates and those were mainly comics. I am exhausted tonight, but will post some pics tomorrow. This is truly a beautiful thing -- a light in a world that sometimes seems pretty dark.

Bill is truly a great person -- and a friend that we wish we could all have. He told me that he had attempted to contact the local television stations to cover the theft, but they were uninterested. So he contacted people he knew at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and that is when a reporter went out to talk to Mike. Jennifer Mann published the story on the St. Louis Today website and it was subsequently picked up by the comic blogs...and the rest is history :)

It was Bill's perseverance that brought this story to light, and he continues to be a good friend to Mike. The best part of this whole ordeal is that it shows how our individual decision to help another person really does matter. I'm very proud to be a new member of this community :foryou:

Reading through the comments, on the FB page, looks like there may be some good news about finding the thieves.

Thank you Jill - Someone just posted a comment on the Newsarama piece that they've found out who the thief was so there's a chance these items might find their way back to him but I'm going to list them here as soon as I get back to my home computer as well as edit them into the Newsarama piece. And then hopefully I can coordinate with Bill to get the items to Mike if that's ok with everyone. note from jill pantozzi.

In one of the discussions at StlToday.com, it was noted that, "Mike explained to me of the items he misses the most are the DC Archive books of Superman from DC Comics. If anyone has these or knows where to get them please send them to him." I'll add some Superman archives, so with what's already contributed he'll get Superman Archives #1-4 and Superman in Action Comics archives #1. I'm adding a few other odds & ends as well, which are already noted in the updated list below.

Friends,

I am new here, but have been keeping track of what's going on since last week, when I started thinking what to do for this guy.

I already forwarded a drawing from a UK student cartoonist, who requested help in printing out and sending a custom drawing to Mike. So that's been done, as of yesterday.

I am going to be sending two Superman t-shirts (blue, with the red Superman logo), and a set of stainless steel dogtags that have the Superman logo on it and a sentiment from Jor-El on it to his son Kal-El. I'm waiting for them to arrive from the Ebay sellers, but with any luck, based on e-mail correspondence with the sellers, I anticipate receiving them within a day or two and sending them on to Mike Meyer, care of Bill Smith, by early next week.

So please add my two Superman t-shirts (just plain red logo, on blue shirt) and the dogtags. I didn't have Superman comic books---have been out of active collecting for some years---but I figured I could do something to bring a smile to this man's face.

Thanks!

This is fantastic news, just made my Friday even better!

This Gerry guy looks more like a Batman street-thug sort of villain, but regardless one scumbag is like any other kind of scumbag. It seems like he is escalating his crimes, so good thing that he is now behind bars. Hopefully all his victims will get their possessions back. :wishluck:
