Last one for this sales thread. World's Finest #44

This is one of the recently-discovered Seduction books. Many collectors don't know this, but a lot of the comics cited by Wertham in Seduction of the Innocent have not yet been identified by collectors. For a list of these comics, see the "LOST SOTI" section at the Seduction of the Innocent website. Not long ago, the SOTI website reported on World's Finest #44, which was used in SOTI multiple times. Here's a copy in about G/VG. It's a pretty sharp looking copy for the grade.

I'd grade it higher but for one notable defect, which is pictured in a couple close-ups. Something sliced the edges of a number of pages. Did somebody poke a scalpel through the book while it was open? These cuts did not result in any paper loss, just some open and some closed slices to the pages and back cover.

I apologize for the fact that my scanner is not available at the moment. I hope these pictures will suffice. If you feel that they are not adequate,

I'll get the scanner working again and post scans.

Yours for $165.

Page 9 of SOTI contains the following quote from Wertham:

Here, too, is the customary close-up of the surprised and frightened-looking policeman with his hands half-raised saying:

NO - NO! DON'T SHOOT

as he is threatened by a huge fist holding a gun to his face! This is followed by mild disapproval ("You've gone too far! This is murder!") as the uniformed man lies dead on the ground. This comic book is endorsed by child specialists who are connected with important institutions.

From page 190 of SOTI, we have this quote from Wertham:

As they sit by the fire the young boy sometimes worries about his partner: 'Something’s wrong with Bruce. He hasn’t been himself these last few days.' It is like a wish dream of two homosexuals living together.

It's evident that even as this book was being published, DC was trying to fight back criticism of comics.

The Ten Cent Plague by David Hajdu, softcover

Essential reading for anybody who wants to know more about the comic book witch hunts of the 1950's. If you're reading this thread and haven't read this book... do yourself a favor and read it. Either buy this affordable copy or pick it up at your local library. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

$8 SOLD

A highly recommended read!

I still have some items left, so I won't close out this thread on the chance somebody stumbles onto it. However, I'll no longer be checking back here regularly to see if there are any new additions. That means if you want something, post here and then PM me. That way the post guarantees you get dibs on the item, and I'll get an e-mail notification as a result of your PM.

Thanks!

I have put together some more goodies. Another copy of SOTI, the original articles from Saturday Review of Literature that brought Wertham to prominence, some of Wertham's earliest writings (not comics-related, though) and maybe some more goodies.

Now I just need to find time to photograph and post them. I'm hoping to do that this week. If I don't get it done this week, then it'll be a LONG time before I can post them. I start a new job in 2012: the dream job with a nightmare commute. So I'll have no time for posting or selling comics for a while.

Price drop on this one, from $20 to $15. See the note at the bottom of you want more details.

Ladies Home Journal, November, 1953. Five months before Seduction of the Innocent was published, Ladies' Home Journal published "What Parents Don't Know About Comic Books", excerpted from SOTI. This article was widely read and helpedfuel the anti-comics hysteria of the early 50's.You can sometimes find copies of this magazine for sale, but rarely do you find inexpensive copies. This one's cheap, and whenyou see the condition you'll see why. FC is detatched and in two pieces. BC is missing entirely. However, the interior including the Wertham article is intact. $20 Ladies_Home_Journal_November_1953_01.jpg

A boardie contacted me about shipping this overseas. This magazine is a large format (about the size of Life, maybe a little bigger) and is printed on glossy paper. As a result, it's heavy: this magazine in a flat cardboard mailer weighs 2 lbs 4 oz. The cost for ordinary uninsured shipping this to Europe was going to be just over $20. Even when I offered to lower the price of the magazine by $5 in light of the high postage costs, the boardie understandably declined the offer. So know I'll open this up to the rest of the boardie universe.... any takers at $15 for the Ladies' Home Journal featuring excerpts from Seduction of the Innocent (and featuring on comic illustration and three photos that were not in SOTI). Shipping to Europe is $20, and shipping within the US will be significantly less (a 2lb, 4oz package shipped from zip code 01038 to your location).Since the exterior of the magazine is in such rough shape, I had this fleeting thought that I could offer to slice out and ship just the Wertham pages, which would reduce shipping costs to almost nothing. But I just can't imagine slicing apart a half-century old magazine any more than I could slice apart an old comic just to make a sale.

And if you thought SOTI was a tough book to find... just try finding a copy of Parade of Pleasure. Also published in 1954, it was the British equivalent of SOTI. Last I knew, Overstreet's info on the book wasn't completely accurate. There were two printings in the 50's: one in the UK and one in the US, and each with a different publisher. This is the UK printing published by Derek Verschoyle. Both of these printings are exceedingly tough to find (I rarely like to use the word "rare" because it's so overused in this hobby and because I've seen things like McFarlane's Spider-man #1 described as "rare".) If you've been looking for this book, then you already know how tough it is to find any copy in any condition. You can buy a copy of SOTI any day of the week if your pockets are deep enough, but original copies of POP just don't show up for sale.

There was a softcover reprint of this book a year or two ago from Pure Imagination. However, that reprint didn't include any of the original illustrations from this book. The only way to read what was said about these comic illustrations is to buy an original.

Side note: the chapter on pinup magazines includes a Marilyn Monroe photo and a story of Irving Klaw and Bettie Page.

This copy is in solid condition, and it actualy has the dust jacket. You can see in the photos that the dust jacket has some condition problems. A previous owner decided to stop the paper loss at the spine and edges by adding extensive transparent tape to the dust jacket. So the dust jacket isn't the best, but the jacket alone is SOOOO tough to find in any condition. I tried to take enough photos that you get a good idea of the condition of both the book and the DJ. If you have questions or would like more photos, just let me know. Yours for $450

Why is this still here? :takeit:

Thanks!

Wow! That cleans out the last of the items from my first day of posting... I'll be listing a few more items tonight.

Did you ship this out yet?

Yes! I sent you a PM on 11/24 to let you know that the book went out via fully insured Priority Mail on 11/22. You should have had it Friday, 11/25 or Saturday 11/26. If it hasn't arrived yet, I'll dig out the tracking and insurance info.
