former 8.5 cgc Avengers 4 now 9.6 pgx

116 posts in this topic

I have to say the book looks better than 8.5 in the picture. I have seen CGC go 9.4 on similar books. A few months back somebody on the boards bought an old label TOS 65 that looked real sharp, resubbed it and it came back 2-3 grades higher. I forget the exact thread, but I know I read it, and I think it was a straight resub.

Anybody have a picture of this book when it was a CGC 8.5?

Yes I know graders shouldn't be buying and selling books, that is wrong. And this guy is known scammer. The owner of PGX must know this goes on, makes the whole outfit crooked.

If the back cover scan in the ebay listing hadn't been intentionally messed with to hide the heavy dust shadow, it would be a lot easier to see why CGC gave this book an 8.5

I see, just increased the brightness I suppose. Or maybe he did some dry cleaning too.

I think somebody posted a picture of him buying this book at a show a few months ago. I wonder how many dealers would simply refuse to sell to him on the basis of his damage to the hobby?

CGC is not going to give a 9.6 to a book with this nasty of a dust shadow :makepoint:

Actually, they have given 9.6 grades to books with bigger and darker dust shadows (presuming those are measures of "nasty")

Dust shadows, for whatever reason, don't seem to be much considered as defects.

Yes! I was wondering why I knew this guy's name.

Wow. At one point I had two identical copies of Uncanny X-Men #475 sketch variant. I had debated sending one to each company, just out of curiosity to see how they came back, but I decided against it and joined CGC instead. Reading this thread makes me glad I didn't send anything to PGX. Just knowing that their head grader gets away with this *spoon* is enough to keep well clear of the company altogether.

Agreed. When I first started getting into collecting slabbed books, I heard so many questionable things about PGX that I even pass them up on Ebay (which routinely sell for the same or less than a raw copy of the same grade). I'll avoid them at all costs - simply because I believe them to be (with all the evidence presented to me) an inferior product.

Only reason I'd buy a PGX on eBay is if it was cheap, and planned on cracking out of their slab to submit it to CGC. But after this whole Avengers #4 thing, I'm even cautious about doing that now. I'd been looking at a Dark Tower: Long Road Home #2 sketch variant on eBay PGX graded at 10, but the price got a bit higher than I was willing to pay.

I actually passed up a book I needed that was PGX. My thought process was that even though I'm paying *under* it's value, I still have to crack and resubmit, costing me another $30-$40 (with shipping) - I'll just wait for a CGC one to turn up.

We all wondered how long it would take. This book was bought by the super scammer Ryan Elliott at the portland show a couple months ago.

The ebay seller is the latest in the long line of shill accounts.djbrady4u.Run dont walk away from this auction.

Not sure what the issue is here since I am not aware of the individuals which you are talking about. (shrug)

Thic could either be a simple resub because the book was initially undergraded by CGC or the book could simply have been pressed to this higher grade. Strongly doubt that this will amount to anywhere close to the $100K increase in value for the Actgion #5 which was initially graded by CGC at 8.5 and then subsequently regraded by them at 9.4 a few months later.

Since nobody seems to be really concerned about the CGC regrade for the Action #5, I don't really understand why you would be so concerned just because PGX is involved with the upgrade for the Avengers #4. A better approach to your argument would be to provide side by side scans of the 2 graded copies, as opposed to simply basing your conclusions on the personalities involved. hm

Simply a warning. If you want to play russian roulette with thousands of dollars be my guest.

PGX 9.9s and 10.0s are CGC 9.6s & 9.8s - don't waste your money ...

Well, that was the thought, hoping for a CGC 9.8 out of the PGX 10, but in the end, the price got too high to gamble with, IMHO, because as pointed out ealier, I'd have to come off the CGC fees as well, and in the end it just wasn't worth it.

Check out youtube, there's a video from a guy who subbed a TMNT #1 1st print to PGX. He got it back and cracked it out to sub it to CGC to get a comparative grade only to discover they (PGX) had switched out his 1st print woth a 3rd print.

:o

I'd take that with a grain of salt.

Why's that? In the video you can clearly see the PGX label says 1st print. When he cracks it out and opens the front cover you can clearly see it says Third Printing on the inside front cover. Take it however you like, grain of salt or not. The book was obviously switched.

Can you send a PGX slabbed book to CGC and have it taken out of the case and re-graded, or do you have to crack it out yourself and then resub it? The way I've seen some people manhandle books while taking them out of the slabs - I'd rather have a pro grader do it than myself.

You can hear that guy's voice change in the video. I'm sure there's skeptics, but to me - it sounds like he's trying to grasp the fact he got screwed and he's experiencing it for the first time. You can almost hear him get to target heart rate in his voice. I can't even imagine that situation...

+1, you can tell he loved that book. I saw that video and I was like I would never ever consider PGX.
