Looks like another weak OA auction at Heritage in May!

OK, I'm totally missing what's going on here. Is this a head fake of some sort?

I don't know, up close, it just doesn't look as "tight" as most of Sinnott's inks on FF that I've seen, especially the non-Surfer elements which look more like, say, George Roussos to me. I'm not saying that it wasn't 100% Sinnott (maybe he was just rushed) but if you look at the Kirby/Sinnott pages that were in the last Heritage auction, for example, and compare the inks on those to this page, the former are so tight and crisp you could cut through wood, whereas I don't get that feeling from this page. (shrug)

I wasn't going to say anything about it, as I don't consider myself to be an expert connoisseur of Kirby FF art, but as Chris also had a similar observation about it, I thought it was a fair topic for discussion. But, what do we know - we both like JRJR's X-Men covers so our tastes obviously cannot be trusted! :P

Love 55 FF artwork.

However, when I looked at the zoom in of the page, the inks look different than I would have expected. They don't feel very Sinnott. Strange.

I thought exactly the same thing when I took a closer look - it really does not feel very Sinnott to me either. hm

Hey Scott

It's probably Sinnott in a rushed moment. I've held dozens of Sinnott inked pieces in my hands and it just looked a little different to me. I am sure there are guys who have seen more than I have and I would love to hear their thoughts. I can't place my finger on what it is so I will chalk it up to him being a little rushed on this page perhaps.

It's a historic page but I would agree that the inking is not as sharp on this issue. I have seen many of these FF 55 pages in person and had the opportunity to purchase a few, and always relented because I felt that the inking was not as refined as in the other issues and it bothered me. Regardless, I would love to own this page (but I know I won't be bidding on it - especially given who I would surmise will be bidding, which would make it a waste of time anyway).

The first publicly sold six-figure panel page???

Well, it's a "half splash", so you'd have to put an asterisk by "panel page". It's one of those pieces where a couple of bidders could conceivably go krazy over it, but, if not, it could very well sell for a more reserved (no pun intended) figure.

I understand now. I used to own the half splash page where Ben punches Silver Surfer through the wall of this same issue, and the inks looked like this one, hence my confusion. I will say that this particular page is inked almost completely in brush, with just a few details inked by pen. Maybe that makes the inks seem a little softer. It's funny that you mentioned the Sinnot inking on those FF pages in the last Heritage auction because I thought some of those pages looked "off" to me, but in a very different way. If you look at the large scans, much of the line art in the PEN work bled very badly (the brush work was fine). I had never seen that on Silver Age Marvel art before and had always assumed that they had great paper that precluded that from happening. It's something that I am sensitive to because so much of the paper that I ink on today is just terrible and my own inks bleed just like those 45 year old Sinnot inked pages. I had thought lousy paper was a recent phenomena, but I was wrong.

On the other subject, I think this is a terrific page and interest will be high, but no way is this a six figure page, and I don't think it will hit that. Just my opinion of course.

Why so sure exactly?

I think the Dark Knight page is pretty great and had tried to close a deal on it a while ago.

I think you should ask for that cover in lieu of the jam of the month club they normally give you guys as a holiday bonus.

Word on the street if Jim is thinking of switching it up to marmalade this year, so you might want to send the requisition memo on this cover pronto.

Thanks!

As far as I know, it's new to the market. It's my understanding, the collector has had it for many years. He also had a great DK page (Bats vs Supes) which he consigned with me as well for the upcoming auction.
