Sunday saw some very interesting results on the 35 cent variants.

There were a boatload of 35 centers that sold for as low as under $10 including some tough reprints like MSH #65 and Marvel Triple Action #37.

Of course the the two books I wanted went much higher than expectedlol

I did have the satisfaction of pushing This book to the point of insanity before losing out. Kind of nice consolation knowing the winner had to way over-pay and the sale will not be in GPA:tink:

Did anyone else think that lower corner on this book looked very suspicious for a trim?

I missed these postings but the seller did himself a great disservice by leaving the word cent out of the listing. I don't think that price is too outrageous for IF14. Low grade copies of that are almost more desirable than higher grade copies because they have some semblance of affordability.

Last Saturday afternoon I took a break from doing yard work to catch the end of an eBay auction of a lot of four books which had hidden in it an Omega #9 35 cent.  I ended up being the only bidder, so I got that one (condition unknown - I have not yet received it, and the pics were kind of blurry, but it appeared to be in decent condition).  I then took a few minutes to peruse eBay before going back to my yard work and found this FF #187 35 cent (a new BIN listing not being sold as a price variant), which I bought.  The only significant defect appears to be the spine stress, but the black ink on the cover is weak.  The CGC census shows the highest graded is 9.0 (2 of them), followed by 2 8.0s, which surprised me.  Is FF #187 scarcer than the other FF 35 cent variants or other super-hero books?  Also, I noticed the indicia states the price is 35 cents.  How many other 35 cent variants say that in the indicia?  The three other 35 cent variants I have state the price is 30 cents in the indicia.  I am more familiar with 30 cent variants than 35 cent variants, so thanks in advance for any info provided.

Well the Kid Colt list continues to shrink

Got this off the boards and it has arrived.  I de-sabbed this book as all my variants are Raw.  It's a CGC 5.0 OW/W, there is a faint 1 1/4" stain top right edge back cover.

I had posted this question in the CGC registry section, but never got a response.  Looking at the CGC registry it appears that they graded an Amazing Adventures #35 (a single copy @ 7.5).  As the complete list for Amazing Adventure 30 cent variants only includes #36 & #37 is this a mistake on someone's part, or is there really 1 copy of Amazing Adventures #35 floating around?  As always, my thanks.  Paul~

CGC Registry:

In the current CGC registry for Amazing Adventures (1970), there is a place for Amazing Adventures #35 as a 30 cent variant; however, I don't believe that there was ever a variant for this particular issue.  See list of 30 cent variants below.

Also, here's a screen grab of the CGC registry listing.

Can we update the registry to reflect that only Issue #36 and #37 exist as 30 cent variants?

Many thanks,

Paul~

Marvel 30¢ Price Variants:

Marvel Comics, April 1976 - August 1976.

In 1976 Marvel faced increasing production costs and experimented with a 5¢ price increase in a number of test markets in the USA between April and August 1976. The test was obviously a success as it lead to a general increase in price to 30¢ in September that year.

Below are what are thought to be the test market areas, this is not definitive but is based on collector purchases at the time and analysis of distributor marks (which is not 100% reliable):

  • California: San Jose area
  • Maryland: Baltimore area
  • Massachusetts: Possibly Spingfield area
  • Michigan: Grand Rapids area
  • New Mexico: Albuquerque area
  • Texas: San Antonio area

Here is the full list of 1976 Marvel 30¢ price variants, showing the published month i.e. the month shown in the indicia and/or on the cover (the month of distribution will have been earlier):

This was mentioned in the body of another thread, but I thought it should be posted in here as well.

Eternals 1 variant $4,950 :whatthe:

One would think that at least a few raw Eternals #1 30 cent price variant 9.8s out there.  If they get in the census, that could bring the price of this one down considerably.

Amazing Adventures 35 does not have a 30 cent variant.

Flying Donut,

Thanks for confirming this for me.  So how do I get CGC to change the registry for Amazing Adventures?  I posted on the CGC registry thread, but got no response. Would calling and explaining the situation help?   Any other ideas?  I'm sure this is not the first time that there has been a mistake in the registry.  Many thanks.  Paul~

Here is some info I found interesting.  It is my understanding that Iron Man 89 is the only 30 cent variant where the indicia states the price is 30 cents, and FF 187 is the only 35 cent variant where the indicia states the price is 35 cents.  I was at a LCS today and looked at a 25 cent IM 89 and 30 cent FF 187.  The 25 cent IM 89 indicia stated the price was 30 cents, and the 30 cent FF 187 indicia stated the price was 35 cents (the FF 187 was a Whitman variant).  Not sure what this means, but one could argue the "variant" of each of those issues is the more common lower-priced versions.

I also looked at Inhumans 5 and Ka-Zar 16; both had indicia which stated the price was 30 cents, which I suppose could indicate Marvel purposely did not have any 25 cent versions of those issues.

Any info or thoughts on the above?
