This I agree with.

But you should keep an eye on auctions, because they can end pretty low, especially when it ends at a bad time like during a game of the NBA finals.

 

If you have the time and dedication you can find them very cheap. I don't actively do it anymore, but I used to find 1 or 2 a month on ebay and know others that would find more consistently. Again time and dedication they don't show up all the time and it requires some finesse to actually know how to look for them and sometimes very good vision.

I might be in trouble. I stumbled upon this thread and I might soon have a new collecting addiction thanks to this thread! 

I've known of that crazy expensive Star Wars 35 cent variant for a long time but did not know there were so many others. Mind you I did not grow up in the 70's. 

Without reading through the whole thread, I saw it mentioned these were sold in test markets. Where were all of these test markets?

Also, is there a master list of all the variants? I clicked on a link a few pages back but it was dead...

I think this was just auctioned off again by the same seller.  Looks like the same book you are talking about.  I bid on the most recent one but didn't win but something must have happened with that original sale for it to have fell through.  The winning bid on the newest auction was private too.

Very nice. Arguably the toughest of them all - I've never seen one in the wild. I've seen all other 30 centers in long boxes or on the wall. Not that bad boy.

There's a few CBC on the top and bottom right corners and a little stain on the top right back cover.  Not complaining though, just happy to have it.
