Prior to that time I never thought twice about 30 cent variants, but the book for some reason fascinated me. The fascination exploded, and I am now slowly selling off my comic book collection to finance my new interest in Marvel 30 cent variants. Anyone have an opinion as to why this happened to me at 54 years old? All I can think of is that in 1976 I was 13 y.o., prime comic book reading age, and this is some kind of nostalgia. My dilemma is I live in a small city in western WI with little opportunity to hunt for price variants outside of eBay and other online sales outlets. I have yet to obtain a Western title, but do have WWT 17, C of C 22 and 23 and X-Men 98 and 100. I want to be patient as far as condition and price go in buying books, but feel like I am way behind the curve. Does this resonate with any of you? WTTB I've told my variant fever story a few times. I had finished a Bronze run and posted it on the boards and Flying D commented, "and the variants" + in some OCD comic book collecting genes and poof 8 years later (might be more, as I've only really moved them up in collecting focus in the last 2-3 years) here I am. The flying one has assisted with the addiction as have others on these boards though, its like aiding and abetting drug seeking behavior. C of C 22 and 23 are nice gets. I think the Marvel variants are an interesting niche in that they check the box for a few things: nostalgia (right in the middle of the Bronze Age), true collectible, meaning they were part of a neat historical anomaly at Marvel and not MANUFACTURED to have different print runs - they are variants because they were not intended to be variants and of course the final incentive, some of them are truly rare. I will say one thing to the OP, your dilemma will be that you have to be patient, yet you will also have to throw patience and caution to the wind (WWT #15 )on more than one occasion. Oh and with extreme thank you's to Tim (wormboy). Magic Number = 11. Can we begin to observe RULE #3 soon HouseofComics.Com and androolx 1

androolx
Here is a question for the collective wisdom and experience of the PVC: The attached image shows the front cover of an Astonishing Tales #36 30 cent variant I recently obtained. The black color on some parts of the cover is quite dark, and on some parts of the cover it is quite light. Based on the way the light and dark is distributed, I would say it is definitely not from fading. As an example, Crazy Moustache Guy's chest is mostly light black, but there is a sliver of dark black above the orange-haired dude's head. The right edge of the front cover also seems generally light, but I suppose that could be fading. The black color on the back cover is like that on the front cover. My questions: 1. Can someone explain the 1976 printing process which would result in the above-described phenomenon. 2. Could it have something to do with the printing of the regional 30 cent price? 3. Has anyone seen this in this particiular book or 30 cent variants in general?
jbud73
I think this is just an issue with the color strike, meaning how much dark ink was in the press during the time this copy was printed in the run. If you are asking if the color strike on 30c Variants is somehow different, or less vivid than their 25c counterparts, I would say not as a general rule. androolx and 01TheDude 1
