Timely Comics from another country

64 posts in this topic

I've been told that this is a Portuguese comic book. Ok, sounds possible to me. What you are looking at in this scan is the BACK cover. I've never seen this artwork before. You Timely sleuths out there can check your interiors to see if you can find it (seems like Billy Parker would be a good choice for this). I don't currently have a scan of the front cover or any interior pages, but I will list some interior information later. Enjoy!!!

Most unusual to use a Leyendecker Saturday Evening Post cover on a Timely comic. Thanks for sharing the scans. (thumbs u

You're very welcome and thank YOU for telling those of us who didn't know (me included) what that front cover is from and by whom!!! (thumbs u

I was able to confirm that this is the Jan 1939 cover for SEP. It was an annual tradition to have Leyendecker do a baby cover to ring in the New Year. If you are not familiar with his work I would encourage you to browse the cover gallery as he was one of the greats during the great age of illustration at the turn of the 20th Century.

It's a Bulletman story based on the title and the hero's name.

Looking through the results at the GCD, I found "The Animal Secret".. and it looks like that's the one:

It's in Master Comics #59 ( http://www.comics.org/issue/4235/ )

I'm not sure where this story comes from either.

VERY well done Peter C!!!! :applause: I'm glad you just got here!!!

I've been here a while, I just don't post much :)

I did a bit more research. The comic is Brazilian (so, yes, it's in Portuguese), and ran from 1940 to (at least) 1956 as a weekly supplement to Jornal o Diario da Noite. There's a cover gallery here: http://www.gibiraro.com.br/persona.asp?curpage=3&id=79&edicoes= which includes an odd mix of reprints of pulps, Saturday Evening Post and all the comic publishers we've mentioned so far.

Here's a bunch for sale: http://lista.mercadolivre.com.br/guri
