Painted Top Of Comics?

3 posts in this topic

I'm slowly stepping back into comic collecting after a several decade haitus. I had a nice chat with the owner of the comic book shop I found that I liked and he told me something interesting that I'm curious about for grading.

He said that the distributor in my city literally spray painted a color on top of the bundles of Marvel comics that came in so retailers could readily gather up unsold copies for return.

I suppose its similar to a date stamp.

I'm wondering if this affects the grade given by CGC, and, also, did this type of marking happen in other cities. If so, what should I keep my for when checking out comics for purchase.

Welcome back to the best hobby there is! grin.gif

Anything that is on a comic book which is not on other copies of the same comic book, is taken into account when a comic book is graded. That said, things like distributors ink ("painted top") or arrival date in pen on Bronze Age or older comic books would have no deduction in grade except in the highest of grades (9.8-10.0) unless extreme or obtrusive.
