Subby and Torch 1955..start of Silver age??

5 posts in this topic

Why are the Atlas/Marvel 1955 titles of Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner discounted as the start of the Silver age?? True, the numbering is continued from the Golden age issues after a hiatus of 6 years, but these issues came out around the same time as Showcase 4 and Detective 225. The characters are the same as is present in the Silver age, the same Subby, and although a different Torch, later Wonderman and the Vision.

because they came out in 1954, pre code, and didn't go anywhere once the Comic Code happened. Showcase 4 was October, 1956, and the continuing characters built upon others.

Subby 39 is the first comic coded Sub-Mariner (April 1955), right about the same time as Detective 225. I do see your point about progression however. Timely/Atlas/Marvel titles ca.1940's and 1950's were always "stutter"-issued (months/years going by between consecutive issues).

because the silver age Flash led to a new GL who led to the JLA which in turn was the inspiration for the FF etc There were a couple of other 50's hero books also before Showcase 4 which also were relatively meaningless like Blue Beetle, the Flame (Ajax titles)
