Me neither, first time I notice that doh!

Me too and I've had my copy for almost 40 years lol. And for what its worth I believe Overstreet guides had 23 wrongly as a cameo for many years in the early editions which is how this whole controversy started.

I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish here. People asked what Red Sonja's first appearance is, probably because there are a bunch of hucksters on eBay claiming that 24 is either her first appearance or first full appearance when in fact it's neither. I'm trying to give them the correct information which is that 23 is her first appearance and her first full appearance. I don't know why you're trying to obfuscate this fact.

Okay, apparently you don't like the story in #23. So what.

Merely, expressing an opinion and prompting discussion.    So what yourself.

And perhaps the worst Gil Kane cover ever . . .

It's the only Gil Kane cover where you can't see up anyone's nose.  That's why it's so jarring.  It's not even typical Kane. It looks like someone blew up a panel from a random comic and made a cover of it.  Then there's the 3 inkers on the interior, one being Chic Stone who should never ink BWS, and one page penciled by Sal and it looks like High School leftovers for Friday lunch.

This one pains me as I sold a 9.8 in 2014 for peanuts compared to this recent sale price 😭😭😭

I think ruing a sale like this is only applicable in context of what you used the money for.  Did you buy other books you wanted?  Did you invest it another way?  Cover an emergency cost or need?  It sucks to have to let go of books from time to time, but as long as you don't just waste the money it isn't always bad.  I could fill a couple pages with stories of books I wish I had kept but 9 times out of 10 it was the right decision at the time.

I haven't found an example in any of the older Overstreets I have of them using the term "cameo" for #23.  But sometime after the 1979 excerpt I posted on the previous page of this thread, with its straightforward notation of #23 is First, #24 is Second, Overstreet adopted its current terminology of

23 = first Red Sonja appearance
24 = first full Red Sonja story

which takes us again to the nonsensical argument about how many panel appearances are required to make a "full" story?  :ohnoez:

At some point there needs to be a recognition that some books are worth more just because they are great stories, without struggling to shoe-horn a first/full  appearance or some other rationale.  Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 is Alan Moore's second issue as writer, but it is where his new direction begins.  New Gods #7 is the back-story of the entire Fourth World series, regardless of the fact that Steppenwolf appears and dies in the same issue.  Batman #237 is one of the great Denny O'Neil / Neal Adams issues, though their Reaper character in that issue has nothing to do with later characters also called the Reaper.  And Conan the Barbarian #24 is just a classic issue, with Barry Smith pulling out all the stops on his way out the door.  rantrant

Huh I just checked my old Overstreet guides and you are absolutely right. It's weird because I totally remember being all pissy about it with some price guide,  definatly wasn't the big Overstreet guide though.

I'm with you on the great stories thing. Might be happening now and maybe that's why Xmen 94 is starting to give GS Xmen a run for it's money again.
