Yes, the Ethiopian place was fun, especially because it was really

messy and the service was appalling. It was very close to that Mexican

burrito place on the other side of the street - oh, the chicken supreme

they had there tongue.giftongue.giftongue.gif

Oh, my goodness - I leave the computer for a few hours and I'm a thread subject!

Gosh, I don't know what to say. It's so kind and caring of all of you. But I wouldn't feel right taking anyone's money like this. It isn't because I don't want it (Murph), I just think you guys should spend the money on yourselves or your families. You work hard for your money and I respect that a lot. Get a comic you want, or something. I'll be okay.

I live 'an artist's' life -- no steady job, just freelancing and working on projects and selling my possessions on ebay (for now). There are a lot of risks living that way, and poverty is the steadiest one. I accept that because it's the only way I can live. I've had steady jobs; I've worked in an office, in stores, and so on. It just doesn't suit me. When I've done that I've been miserable, despite being financially okay. So one day in 1990 I just stopped and never did it again.

A project I started two years ago should be kicking in around late spring, and when it does, I'm hoping it'll generate a living wage. I'll still get to live without an alarm clock, and that's what matters. Until then, I'll just keep selling my stuff (thank goodness I was always a pack rat and a collector).

And murph, $50 can be an enormous amount of money if you're broke. I don't spend anything without thinking about it. Necessities take everything I have and sometimes, I'm left short of that. I once lived for 3 solid weeks on nothing but top raman because it cost 10c a meal, and that's all I could afford. I'm not there right now, but I could be if I started buying myself treats like a DVD player. I'm very wise with my money.

I'll buy myself that toy in a few months, when the money starts flowing again. Then everyone's invited to my place for movies! I'll supply the popcorn, Hammer can bring the bag of money for a door prize.

Don't be too hard on Murph, he's one of the few guys with a thick bankroll who had something to say about the perverse-ness of filthy rich guys playing the lotto, trying to get filthier. An old Open Forum thread.

On the other side of the coin Joanna, more power to you, trying to be as resourceful as possible and scratch out the "artist's life" - but because you're doing it by choice (could work a regular job, but just can't "live that life") I gotta say you're right not to ask for any outside help. As a contrast, I have a message-board-type friend (entirely different board) who is doing all she can to keep a roof overhead and and stay fed, with quite literally everything she owns that isn't neccessary for life, potentially up for sale or already gone. This all due to a degenerative nerve disease that's getting worse, and makes it very difficult for her to work at all. Topping it off, her garage burned up - and with it, many of those possessions she needed to sell.

Her, I'll continue to support, because she's in a similarily slim-pickins' situation, although not by choice.

Don't be too hard on Murph

I wasn't trying to be hard on murph; I was just trying to explain things. If someone was debating whether to spend a quarter or not, I'd probably react as he did. A quarter just isn't a big deal. To murph, $50 isn't a big deal. I understand the mindset. There's no recrimation here, believe me.

but because you're doing it by choice (could work a regular job, but just can't "live that life") I gotta say you're right not to ask for any outside help.

There are extenuating circumstances that I didn't go into, but the bottom line is that even if I could take a 'regular' job, I probably wouldn't. Because of that, I'll never ask for help. I've been there, too. I spent most of 2001 very, very sick. I was unable to make a living and my mother helped me out. I never want to be helpless again. It was terrible. So no matter what, I'll be okay. That's a guarantee.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. It's very kind of you to help her. I'm spending this weekend duping some audio tapes for a friend who is dying of cancer. She is near the end now, but there's one thing that keeps her mind off of her pain. She loves audio books -- to be specific, she likes the ones I tape. (I'm a voice actress). I read her favorite stories onto tape and send them to her. The cost is tapes and postage (and I've budgeted for that). So even someone as broke as I am can help. That's what's important, not DVD players.

Sorry, murph. I just heard today that she'd taken a turn for the worst, so it was on my mind.

Besides, you're still very young. When you gain a few years, this sort of thing becomes more and more common. Sad but true fact of life.

WARNING: Please skip this post if you have no sense of humour.

Joanna, I have the perfect solution for you to raise ALOT of cash on a regular basis. Just "dance" 2 nights a week. Doesn't have to be nude or topless either. You can dance in a "go-go" bar. Wear what you would at the beach! The real money is in the VIP and table/lap dances anyway. Just two nights a week, and if you have the gift of gab, you'll make more than 90% of the posters on here weekly!!! .

Besides, with all these millionaires lingering around you should not only be able to get a DVD player but an entire THEATER added on to your house/apartment/lean-to! Heck, I bet if you asked reeealll nice, someone would get you your own set of celebrities! Then you could put on your OWN shows! wink.gif

Sorry Joanna, I'm in a similar situation. I'm moving out of the folks place and into an apartment with my younger brother. Paying the deposit + a months rent + credit card bill + loan payment + car insurance + everything else is draining me of all funds. I'm going to have to spend less and save more from this time forward. I might splurge ocassionally when I can afford to do it, which probably won't be very often now. It looks to me like there are enough generous people around here that you won't even need my help.

Thanks to everyone that could afford to contribute!

Joanna, watching movies on DVD is about as good as it gets. Maybe I have good eyes, but I noticed a substancial difference when I upgraded to the DVD format. The picture appears more crisp/sharp, the colors are deeper/richer, chapter/scene selection can be useful/handy and many times the extra features are pretty cool too! If you enjoy fantasy, then be sure to get a copy of The Lord of the Rings EXTENDED version on DVD. It has roughly 30 minutes of new scenes and even a new music score for the extra scenes. The EXTENDED version is also loaded with extras and special features. The Spider-Man movie on DVD also came with some nice extras too. BTW, I have a movie recommendation for you. Check out the movie "Anna and the King", LMK what you think if you watch it...
